Looking for a specific kind of folder

You're literally going to beat the hell out of a folder cutting 4" rope!
Save a few bucks and grab a WE 710 model.
4" D2 sheepsfoot blade is sort of made for rope cutting and it's like 100 bucks.
I was skeptical but bought my first knife made by WE (not branded WE though) and the quality exceeded my expectations.

Recon 1 XL Tanto Serrated

You get 5" of serrated CTS-XHP for your rope chores, but still have the little tanto plain edge portion for finer cutting tasks.

You'd be like a dedicated rope cutter on the jobsite

oh now there's a pretty thing !
Where do I get a serrated sharpener like that all perfect for use on Cold Steel serrations ?
Please, please.

and
T.L.E.,
It's hard to argue with the
Recon 1 XL Tanto Serrated

I was going to say to the OP : Don't worry about the S110V or the 10V; just buy a good coarse diamond pocket stone and have fun with all those made for the job vanadium carbides but that Recon XL is looking like the ticket.

Wow. I bought by brother a voyager xl last month so I'm vaguely familiar with this lineup but MAN... that is a rope cutter.

I'm curious. Why m4 instead of 20cv?

Also, why the 4max rather than something slimmer and cheaper like a Recon 1?

Why m4? Toughness, easier to sharpen.

Why do I like the 4max? I like the bulky handle, the sheer strength of the lock, the smoothness, the looks too. Best knife I've ever held.

Man, 4” rope, a very long serrated blade came to mind. The serrated XL tanto from Cold Steel looked good, though I’m dubious about sharpening the tiny serrations. SE Police or Pacific Salt from Spyderco would cut well. The Salt performs very well in SE, better than most other steels. I know you don’t need the stain resistance, but I’m recommending it for the performance, secure in the knowledge that the rustproofness won’t harm you. Don’t sailors use robust fixed blades and baton through hawsers? Maybe a PE Recon 1 XL is the ticket. Its lock can withstand batoning.

The 4 Max looks nice but absurdly heavy at 10.25 ounces, and very pricy. The 5.5” Recon is more bang for fewer bucks and lighter, too.

On that kind of job site , I'd assume sooner or later , a high risk of the knife going overboard . So , something less than $100 might be better than $300 ! I'd go Cold Steel for best value / performance .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

One thing to consider is what exactly it is you are cutting. Synthetics such as Amsteel can be very hard on a knife. That stuff will actually cut through a shackle if you let it run through one under tension. You aren't going to keep any sort of edge on any knife for very long cutting modern high strength synthetic materials.
In addition, if you are working on a dredge operation, that means lots of mud. Wet ropes mean dirty ropes, and a knife won't last long in those conditions.

Another vote for the contego, it may not be the prettiest knife when you first look at it but this blade gets under your skin like an ugly mutt and you'll fall in love.

I'm at a point now that Im worried I won't be able to find another knife that lives up to it. Crooked River is a bit too light and most framelock knives also don't compete with how nice the axis lock is on the contego and as far as I have read it is a bulkier lock than the smaller benchmades knives axis lock system.

I own a DMT xtra coarse stone. It's a beast. I realize i could make a great rope cutting edge on any knife with that stone but I would prefer toughness.

Man, I am REALLY impressed with the turnout in this thread. You guys are awesome.

Just saw the email, the m390 version of the contego just came back in stock in knifeworks today. For $180 it's a big slab of m390

I am also impressed with the YT video of the Cold Steel Recon 1 in CTS-XHP. Another very heavy-duty...not serrated but the video shows about 5000 cuts in 1" manila rope before the guys' hands got tired.

Is your job paying for this knife for you?
Cause that's a lot of wear on it.

No, the job is not paying for the knife. The excess wear on the knife is a legitimate concern. Maybe I should think a little more budget friendly. The large cold steel recon 1 might be a better choice although I will have to sharpen it more. Since wear is inevitable, i could always bring a cheap pocket sharpener (I know, carbide blades is blasphemy but let's face it, the knife just needs to serve a purpose and I'd need to sharpen it quickly.

Thank you all for the ideas. I haven't decided on anything yet but this has truly helped. Switching to night shift, today is changeover day fot me 18 hour shift. Then nights. Take care everyone.

I have 3 knives from the same company. They are solid workhorses. The company is Steel Will and the knives I am suggesting are ones that I own.
1st Steel Will Apostate, it is a bit over 4" and is S35VN It has been discontinued but is readily available on the secondary market between $99-$150. Super solid knife.
2nd is the Mini Gekko 1550 series available in N690, D2, M390. It is a backlock bush craft knife. I have it in N690 and It takes a beating. 3.5" Made in Italy, the knife is flawless.
3rd is the 1500 series Full size Gekko same quality as the mini. Same steels and colors are available.
4th is the Cutjack in M390. Most expensive on the list but still a pretty a tough knife. Available in 3" or "3.5
Steel will has other models that are also very tough and are perfect for your line of work. Steel will has a knack for balancing form and function in many of their knifes. They have a knife for every budget from $42 - $300.
