Looking for a starter benchmade....

Gotta say the griptillian! I have both sizes and I like the smaller one better. Great utility knife. I use mine for everything including food preperation and eating. You won't regret it.

If you are going for a Thumbhole, why not the Original, a Spyderco?
The Delica would be in the same size and price range.

Stick with your instincts toward BM. There are many other fine makes and models, but the D2 Grip won't let you down nor bust your budget. It is an example of superior knifemaking.

I better say - Griptilian is "Affordable, Entry level". On my knife the blade scratch handle little bit when I open it - I think it is may be because the plastic handle is to soft and it is not solid. If I put some pressure (by your fingers) on handle sides I see how plastic sides bend inside blade space. For some reason, I do not like this. I go for G10 better.
However it does not affect cutting power etc. Blade, steel, sharpness, Axis lock etc - quality is out of questions, perfect!
I bought 732D2 after Griptilian with G10 handle, but it is more expensive.
Thanks, Vassili.

Either the FRN w/VG10 Delica or the mini-grip, in 440C or D2, would be great choices. the mini-grip is a little more sturdy (and actually more sturdy than the full-size grip which I think Vassili is referring to). It will also open more smoothly than the Delica. Both of these knives are more solidly-built than the Ascent, although a mini-TSEK is strongest b/c of the dual steel liners, and is a smooth-opening great design as well, although it's also the heaviest knife of the 4. It pretty much comes down to what feels best in your hand, and whether you prefer axis / liner / lockback. I've had them all & they are all good knives.

I was in the same position as you, but I got a Delica PE in VG-10 instead becaues it was a little bit cheaper. I am not a knife nut, I was only looking for a good qualtiy folder that didnt break my wallet. I have no regrets on getting the Delica because it fits my needs, although I would still love to get at least one or two Benchmades with the AXIS lock (710HS :)). I think its a win/win situation with either knife.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Spyderco Native in S30V, or the older version in 440V, or the Native 3 in VG-10. The Native is just a cool design, and very comfortable to use. Just my opinion.

Originally question was - starter benchmade for $50.
I think it is Griptilian.
However I prefer Kershaw Avalanche - best combination of features, materials and price. But 732 looks better (Elishewitz!).
Thanks, Vassili.

Does the modified sheepsfoot blade griptillian come in D2 or just the 440C? The ones at Cabelas looked to be the modified drop point.
