Hey guys,

I'm looking for a tough folder that I can use to cut lots of line and natural substances, will hold a good edge and that can take a good ammount of abuse. Right now I like the Cold Steel pocket bushman, my price range is around 60 bucks.

Any help would be awesome!

Evan

BM Grip.

CS pocket bushman feels too thin and is bad for hot spots if you aren't wearing gloves.

I don't usually make this recommendation, but for what you said your going to cutting, I'd go with a fully serrated Spyderco Endura.

Spyderco Spyderhawk or Tasman Salt.

They're both hawkbill that comes in plain or serrated and black or yellow for high visibility (and looks a little less fearsome). Plus it is made of H1, which is incapable of rusting but holds a decent plain edge and an excellent serrated edge. They're the same thing but different sizes.

I hope this doesn't come off as trolling, but you couldn't pay me enough to use a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. I've seen and heard way too many horror stories about that locking mechanism and it just doesn't seem like an ergonomically friendly blade.

The Pocket Bushman has its uses, but if I was carrying a knife I'd choose something else. I have a Pocket Bushman and keep it as an "open/close little" use knife, e.g. as a camp site folder that is opened when I get there and closed when I leave.

Look at some of Cold Steel's offerings with the Tri-Ad lock; so far, these have impressed me as to bang for the buck high strength knives. They have some new ones coming out, too.

The CS Pocket Bushman has a pretty uncomfortable handle plus the lock is a pain in the butt to operate, strong but uncomfortable.
And what are these "natural substances" you are talking about? Hard? Soft? Fibrous?

Kershaw Junkyard Dog II can be had for $50-60 shipped. good steel, VERY thick liner lock (actually more like a frame lock with a scale over it), great ergo's and nice grippy g10 scales. I picked one up for $50 shipped just a few days ago.

60 bucks to work with? I would highly recommend the Benchmade Mini/Large griptilian OR a Spyderco Delica/Endura

Benchmade Griptilian
Spyderco Endura, Delica, Native,
Ontario RAT Folder
Cold Steel Recon
Kershaw Blur, Storm II, RAM, Shallot, Speed Bump

well I'm a sailor, and I need a strong knife to cut lots of fibers natural and synthetic (hemp, kevlar, nylon). I'll definitely check out the benchmade grip and the spyderco endura

You're a sailor cutting rope? Then definitely a Spyderco Spyderhawk (if you're unfamiliar with it, its H1 steel is literally rustproof):

In your price range I'd suggest a Buck Vantage Pro. For around $40-$50 it's the best value in a knife with S30v steel that I know of at the moment. Also a Spyderco Tenascious, $30.

The composite Leek for $38 shipped is a fantastic bargain if smaller blade will fit your needs. The composite Junkyard Dog is also a fantastic slicer/cutter and worth a whole lot more than $45 delivered.

I'd take a look at the serrated versions of the Spyderco's Pacific Salt and Atlantic Salt, they were pretty much designed with this in mind. Rustproof, excellent serrations and high visibility scales, that H1 steel is a blessing to have around water, especially salt water.

My thoughts exactly:
"Rope? SAILOR? I like the way this going. :D"
Definitely one of the Salt series. If it's mainly rope you're cutting a Spyderhawk or a Tasman Salt, which ever size you prefer.
If you want a more multi purpose blade then the Pacific Salt or Salt 1. Or maybe the Atlantic Salt?
H1 excels with serrations, but plain edge is also good if oyu know how to sharpen, basicly the more you sharpen H1 the harder it gets resulting in more wear resistance.

I'll second the Salt series from Spyderco. I work on tug boats, and lots of the guys out here use them (myself included). The steel WILL NOT rust, and holds a great edge.
I'd recommend the Atlantic Salt, for its sheepsfoot blade shape, or the Pacific Salt if you want a pointy tip. Definitely go for a serrated edge for cutting those synthetic fibers.

I agree with Houndstooth. The Ontario rat folder is an excellent choice. I owned the pocket bushman for about a week. I didn't like it. The lock was strange. In order to disengage it one has to place there hand in an uncomfortable position and really manhandle the thing to get it to work. However as others have said, It makes a good strong knife if you are using it like a fixed blade. Not opening and closing it often, or just having it open when in use. Otherwise I would go with something else. However having said that, To each his own. Get what you like. Who knows you may love the bushman.
