Looking for a traditional fixed blade for my little brother.

I've given him some pocket knives over the past few years, including but not limited to some junkers, a surprisingly well made Harley folder, a Buck 373, a Vic SAK (which model?), and a few others which escape me right now. I am giving him a Spyderco Delica for his birthday. For Christmas, he's getting a BM 42, and Kutmaster camp knife. I was going to give him a BM mini Grip, but I figured he should have a fixed blade.

I have a custom maker in mind, one of his EDC models in the 4" range would be good, but this maker doesn't have any models with single guards. Waiting on him to get back to me on that, in the meantime, I'd like some suggestions from you guys.

My little brother is 13, and while tall for his age, he is a stick. Growing like a weed though. Strong, really good hook :D (I like to tease, he's a good kid). I am looking for a fixed blade under 100 bucks, with a single guard, a conventional handle, preferably traditional. Stainless or carbon/tool steel, but this is for a kid. He needs to learn how to sharpen and take care of his knives, so carbon is okay, but I guess stainless or tool steel would be best.

He is no stranger to sharp things, he used his SAK and 373 to build a fort, and then finished it "borrowing" my Battle Rat.

I would like this to be a traditional design, drop point would be great.

I have a Western W36, that after cleaning up I might give him.

Maybe a Case FIN 3 with the stacked leather handle , very nice little fixed blade in ss.Just a thought, but a good one for a young or older fella, Reasonable price and good looking knife with good leather sheath......Mike

How about a nice Marbles Fieldcraft or Sport? 3 3/4 inch blade, 0170-6 carbon steel, single guard, made in the U S of A, about 70 bucks!

The Sport is more of a drop point.

Have you considered one of the Bark River knives? I haven't stayed current with their offerings, but they probably have a knife like the one you are looking for.

Queen Amber stag Bone skinner with 4 inch blade, D-2 polished steel 8 inch oal, with leather sheath..$40.00...They all sound like good options really..Mike

That site coldwood has a little of everything for the fixed blade and folder knives. Good site, and reasonable......Mike

A caution on the Queen fixed blades. I bought one of the skiners (the one that looks like a Woodcraft) a few years ago. The sheath it came with was pretty bad. The sheath didn't fit the knife very well and the liner wasn't attached to the sheath; it was just stuck in. I gave up on the sheath when the knife poked through it and stuck me in the leg. Still love the knife, one of my favorites, but hate the sheath. Ended up making a new one.

Man Lion I was hoping you didn't say you hated the knife,I like mine hell of a knife.

The last several years I've been using a wood handle mora from Frosts, with the carbon laminated blade. Its proven to be a tough customer, and with a puuko style leather sheath it looks very traditional. Ragnars has them at very resonable prices.

I would go with Bark River. There are a couple of models in your price range, although you'll have to settle for micarta handles since the natural handles (wood, stag, etc.) seem to fetch higher prices.

Scandi knives are great as well, and you can get a few for $100! There are some very nice leuku-pukko combos at Ragnar's for around $100.

Check out Buck's line of fixed blades. Great knives from a great American company.

Buck's little 102 is a great knife in my opinion. I'm not even looking at fixed blades anymore as I'm content with it. You should consider it as a gift for your brother.
