I'm looking for advice on which custom knife maker here would be my best bet to have make my wife a set of knifes I'd like something very clean and in a minimalist style. I just need a nice 3 piece set to cover the basic uses with nice steel and an organic handle that will hold up nicely to use.

What knife maker do you guys think might serve me best?

Thanks for any help!

I'll break the ice here.
Russ, recommending a custom knife maker is a little different; unlike recommending a mechanic for example. People may have a hard time volunteering someone else to do work. Your best best is to look at different knives on this forum and look for a style or theme that you like. Then approach them to see if they are interested.
One alibi is if there is someone who specializes in kitchen knives and is looking for work. Something else that would help is your price range. You could be talking anywhere between $400 and $4,000 depending on your budget.
Good luck!

Take a look in the kitchen knife section of the "knifemakers for sale area". What your looking for may already be there waiting for you. If not at least you can see what these guys are able to produce and get a better idea of who you might want to approach for your build.

Good luck in your search.

Jeff

Thank you both for the insight and the valid points made! I'll cruise on over to the kitchen knife section (I wasn't aware there was a forum the site is vast and large I'm still trying to visit all the sections).

I just worked with Ian Hall (HallHandmade) and it was a pleasure. From beginning to end the experience was very well and professionally handled. I got exactly as I asked for too. A striking Santoku for my wife.

Ian, I really hope that doesn't embarrass you. Props where they are deserved and all that. :p

GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THE HECK THEY ARE DOING AND HAS EXPERIENCE. There are a few guys here who make good chefs knives,Butch Harner, Randy Haas and a few others. I suggest that you do a search and become familiar with the type and styles of knives you want. then look at the makers that Can make that knife not just a sharp object that they call that type of knife. look at some of the online knife stores, www.japaneseknifeimports.com and www.epicedge.com are two good places to start. Devin Thomas is a great maker with great heat treatment. Jon at JKI pretty much only handles Japanese style knives while Daniel at epic edge has most styles of chef's knives.

Thank you bill!

That's where I'll begin, those referenced sites.

Your post held a bunch of reasons why I posted I don't want a pretty (but otherwise useless) knife I want it to be functional as well as a direct extension of the maker and something that my wife can pass down.

I have an idea of what I after but I believe in artistic freedom to allow a maker to be able to do their best work without putting them in much of a box. I'm really please at the help and direction you folks have offered and will chase ever rabbit hole to the end so I don't leave any option unsearched.
