Looking for a very specific knife... Advice?

I have been searching for an EDC that meets certain requirements for quite some time. I've looked for a searchable database of knives with filters (shape, size, carry position, steel, etc...) but have yet to find one. I've been looking for something like the Gerber Applegate-Fairburn folders. I ordered one of the higher priced ones in 154CM but when I arrived I found the fit and finish to be sub-par. I love the blade and handle shape though and I find it perfectly suited for EDC utility and self-defense.

I would appreciate any recommendations on a knife that possesses the following properties:

1) Spear point w/ false edge (preferably non-serrated)

2) AUS8 or better steel

3) right-handed tip-up clip

4) Micarta, g-10 or well textured handles.

5) 4" or close to it in length.

6) Assisted opening would be a major plus.

7) No bayonet clips.

These are some of the knives I have considered but did not quite fit the bill:

1) Benchmade Pardue 530 (too small)

2) Cold Steel Ti-Lite (love this knife but it's a bit too off-putting for an EDC)

3) Al Mar SERE 2000 (bayonet clip)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

not A/O, but the yet to come out CS counter point I comes to mind. As does Boker AFD.

I've looked at both and seriously considered the counter-point. I should have put "one-handed opening/closing" and I can't see closing as lock-back with one hand. The Boker AFD is perfect accept for the clip carry position. Thanks for the feedback I wish I could find a good searchable database for knives online....

Still waiting for the bigger CS Counterpoint to come out, but it sounds like it would be right up your alley. If Darrell Ralph would ever release the 4 inch Madd Maxx in his HTM line you'd have that to look at too. So far he's only got the 5.5 in the HTM line but a custom 4' Madd Maxx would be perfect if you're made of money.

Edit: I'm a dumbass. Darrell Ralph does make a 4' Madd Maxx HTM. They're not exactly giving them away, though.

Hi, I think based on your requirements that your tastes may change, and you may end up favoring different requirements. Most people who start out liking assisted opening end up shying away from it, and after some use the majority of users find spear points are really impractical.

That being said, the Spyderco Native 4 (FRN) seems to fit your requirements and is well liked.

I agree with res1cue. The Boker AFD is a good candidate. The flipper makes it very easy to open quickly. The handle scales are aluminum but provide a good grip with bi-directional traction
grooves.

Actually, there is a version of the Böker Applegate Fairbairn that has a tip up option (The limited AF-FD). If you're up for a little searching and your price range will accommodate it, I'd recommend that. I have one and it's very well made. S60V steel, glass breaker tip, aluminum handles, and it "waves" open out of your pocket with the hilt. A user here uploaded a pic of it here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/835740-Excellent-Warranty-Service-from-BOKER

I'd like to thank everyone who replied. I really do appreciate the feedback. All really good recommendations. If I were made of money I'd go for the madd maxx hands down but since I'm not the Boker AF-FD is looking pretty good :)

edit: Maybe the SOG until I finish school ....

How about the Benchmade/HK 14205? It meets all your requirements, except its non-assisted and the blade is about 3.40 inches.

Only thing is the AFD is a bit rare. Maybe you can get STR here on the forums to make you a T/U clip

BTW I can make all of my triad-locks close one-handed. Just depress the lock and use my leg to bring the blade in just a hair, then move fingers and finish closing using leg. Sounds dangerous but I've been doing it for 2 years at least and have never cut myself once this way because the detent is pretty strong and then blade doesn't have a tendency to close up on you

Please consider Benchmade Stryker. It is really good and meets most of your requirements.

Here are some pics of my AF-FD to give you a better idea of the clip placement and grip:

One of it closed; you can see that the blade is completely covered. So you could even sharpen the top false edge if you wanted:

Ooh, I did not realize it was tip-up carry. Is it wave-able?

Yep, waves open pretty easily. They got the detent just right on this one, so it's enough to build up pressure on the flipper so you don't have to flick your wrist, but it's also smooth enough that it opens fast and waves. This is the only version of the Applegate that has a tip up option; the standard version and other limiteds don't. I think it comes tip down from the factory, but you can change it to any of the 3 positions with the Böker plate.

Accept right handed tip up carry. More than any other criteria that is a deal breaker.

Sorry for the double post... Can't seem to figure out how to delete the first.

Something to consider indeed. I'll admit I am quite fond of the Counter Point. If my Ti-Lite were a bit wider bladewise I would carry it more often but it tends to draw some curious looks even in a night club.
