Looking for advice on a dedicated knife to melt packaging

You want a full-flat-ground wharncliff for this purpose, have you looked at kershaw leeks? Slim but durable enough for your specific purposes, and the assisted opening gives a lot of fidget fun factor.

I have a yobimbo. The primary design is to pierce flesh and the blade design will cut down as push in. Put it to hard work in a warehouse and the tip will be damaged soon, and they are pricey.

I have many delicas. Awesome steel and blade shape offers but starting price of 70+ dollars I would not recommend for a work knife. Loose it and figure out how many hours you have to work to replace it.

Para3 - I got 8 different steels to choose from but they are even more expensive than the delicas and none of them go to work with me.

With the many knives I have when it comes to work you describe I always reach for my tried and true Kershaw “needs work” knife. It is a wharncliff blade but the point is robust. The auction site has a few for sale. They have been discontinued.

It’s a bit different than most of Spyderco’s offerings, but if you can order off of Massdrop, there’s the Brad Zinker Dogtooth. Wharncliffe blade in S35VN, and being a titanium frame lock flipper, it should hit that fidget factor pretty well.

I don’t own one... yet. It’s one that’s been on my radar for a while now, but the reviews I’ve read makes it seem like a good one.

If you're going to "melt" the packaging, that indicates heating the blade.
In which case I would suggest any FROST or Gerber knife shaped object, since heating the blade will not hurt the non-heat treated (mild steel?) blades they have.

Thank you everyone. A somewhat overwhelming but very welcome amount of recommendations!

Looks like the Tuff Lite and Delica Wharncliffe are highly recommended...

I used to be into knives nearly 30 years ago, and I'm kinda feeling that way again now... so I think what I might do, since I like so many of these, is grab a Tuff Lite, just so I have something I can use right away, but then keep a list of the others you all have recommended and buy them over time:

Delica Wharncliffe

I liked the black talon 2, then I saw that orange spyderco one and prefer the non-S curve, so that's on the list, looks fun

Glad to have the smock 20CV recommended I will check that out also, definitely prefer that over the CF version.

The leek and dogtooth also look nice.

... it begins, I guess. Already looking to see which steel variations etc on some of them are around still. Thanks all!

I have found that CRKT's Veff serrations work wonders on those damn plastic things they package everything in nowadays!!!

Which one did you go with!?!? I think we would all like to know which one you went with and why.

Hi! I ordered a Tuff Lite, went looking for a hap40 delica wharncliffe but no luck, so I just ordered a regular delica wharncliffe yesterday. Keeping a list of the rest because I like them all :)

Good deal man!! TBH thats absolutely a solid choice! Have you received it yet? It may not be hap40 but back in the 90's that aus8 was awesome! To tell you a big secret it stillnis. They do great with their heat treats, you pick up the triad lock (incredible strength incase those boxes fight back) , and its crazy easy to sharpen especially the wharncliff. Nice pick man. Share some pics and opinions man I'd be glad to know how it works out for you.

I use Boker GoBag for all kind of package openings.
Secondary point of tanto blade is slight, but enough to start that cut into tape, small, light, cuts cardboard, plastic, nylon, bubble wraps and asks for more.
Toothy edge of D2 steel seems to be ideal for that application. And edge retention is great too. I even used that knife to cut paracords and thinner ropes.
