For some reason, I have a terrible time with stick and hidden tang knives. I'm thinking specifically about the tangs on the Frosts blades available from the local woodworking shop. The tang comes out of the blade fairly wide, and then tapers to a rod cross section. Any advice on how to put a simple wooden handle on these would be appreciated.

Mark the tang shape of the side of the wood block ( for stag ask someone else). Mark the tang width on the top of the block (end against the guard). Set the block in a drill vice at an angle to match the angle on the tang, set the depth appropriatly. Drill the outer two holes first, usually to a limited depth. Set the block straight and drill the interior holes.

For stag, mill out the pith, of the handle with a long drill bit, close to the thickness of the tang. Fit the tang into the stag, Fit a guard to cover the frontend of the stag. and make a butt cap it nescasary, fill the stag hole almost full of epoxy. Put it all together, put it under some pressure, and let cure. (For pressure I stand the knife vertical tip up on my drill table, take a block of rubber put it between the knife tip and the drill press chuck put a small weight (2-5 lbs) on the quill arm. To hold the pressure and let it cure overnight).

Hope that made sense...
