Looking for advice on smoothing out finish build up at bolster/handle junction

When finishing my knives I have been masking off the bolster with painters tape to prevent the finish from building up on the metal. In the past I would have to chip or buff the finish off of the bolster in order to be able to polish the brass or nickle silver to a mirror polish. This method though always leaves me with a lip at this junction due to the finish build up. I've tried to buff this lip smooth but it is hit or miss because i run the risk of accidentally removing the finish from the handle. I was wondering if anyone out there has a tip or trick for avoiding this kind of an issue

Any takers on this one? I know Nick W. used to do a 0.010-0.020 reveal on some of his knives and I've seen people recess the spacers with a round file but I'm looking for a way to keep a smooth transition through out the piece.
