You may have noticed that I have posted a Mission MPK for sale here in the production Fixed blade for sale forum. I really hope that someone here picks it up and finds it as useful as I did.

However, I have done some reading deeper into the posts here in the GB&U and am concerned about fraud. I have never sold a knife in this venue before and I would like some advice as to the most secure way of receiving my money. I am leaning toward the cashiers check or the money order (sent registered mail for a signature from me stating that I received it). After I have the money I would use the same sort of thing for when I send the knife.

It seems to me, though, that the majority of us here are honest and I feel comfortable. I just want to ensure security for both ends.

Until you know people it's best to use money orders or PayPal (www.paypal.com). Money orders from stores and the post office are relatively easy to get. PayPal is fast and secure.

Tracking for money orders and knives is easily done through UPS, FEDEX, or by using Delivery Confirmation for mail.

PayPal tracks sending and receiving money. If you javen't used it before first time users get a $ 5 credit.

The previous recommendation is good. But, in reality, it really doesn't matter how you receive payment as long as you receive payment. My feeling is, that you can receive payment by any method including personal check (you can wait for it to clear). Money order or Cashiers check isn't really necessary. Paypal, on the other hand is questionable since I just read a post about someone having the transaction reversed because it was in dispute from the sender. Anyone can dispute a transaction!! Now, if there is justification, ok. But, that remains to be seen.

But the issue here is getting payment. I work with paypal because it is convenient.

The best recommendation I can think of is, get payment in whatever method you feel comfortable with. But, receive payment before you ship the knife if you have not done business with the individual, or he/she does not have a good reputation with payment.

The bottom line is a satisfactory transaction for both of you. And most of all, be honest and up front about what you are selling and be aware that everyone doesn't interpret condition in the same way. Therefore, some evaluation period is also called for when selling a knife. By following what I have said, chances are there will be no dispute.

Just My 2 cents.

Thanks.

I always prefer Postal Money Orders because they are almost impossible to forge and are as good as cash at any banking institution. Interestingly, my Credit union bank tells me that even Cashier's checks are easily forged and they put a 2 day hold on the money in your account until they clear. The only thing no holds are placed on according to them are US Govt checks and Postal Money Orders.

Ever since they told me that I always request a Postal Money Order. I also send all packages now thru the US Post office also because not only is it usually faster than UPS but the Postal Inspector is a good person to have on your side in the event of any fraud on the other end. I also make sure to insure everything over $50 in value.
