People have always said you can get a custom made for the price of some production knives, so who knows a good custom maker? Im going to be selling off alot of stuff on the bay soon and im going to try to get a custom if the price is right for what i want, any reccomendations?

What range is affordable and what is it you "want"?

like uhh sub 200, if there is even makers who do such a thing? I want a folder tho. If not ill just sell off the stuff an put it with my change jar and keep saving up for something. I got like 150$ in cheaper knives that i never carry so ima get rid of em.

This is actually a great question. I've been wondering this myself lately.

I'm a poor grad student, and I'm just looking for a functional knife. I've been looking in the makers for sale section, and seen lots of good stuff, but usually its more expensive than I want, and with more "frills" than I need. Don't get me wrong, I love beautiful burl handles as much as the next guy, but the simple things would suite my wallet better.

I'm not personally ready to spring on a new blade quite yet, but I think the question is good, because I hear lots of people saying this same thing.

Can you wait a little? Get on Dozier's list, if you see a knife you like. I'm so glad I did. Doziers pop up now and then too.

You're going to have a really hard time finding a nice custom folder under $200. Step up into the $300-400 range and your options become far more plentiful. For $200 you might as well stick with production knives. Pick up one of the higher end benchmades or a ZT if you want to stay around $200.

I think when people say you can get a custom for the price of some production knives they are referring to companies like CRK and Strider, whose knives go for $400+.

the only fixed blade i could consider carrying is a small wharncliffe with a kydex pocket clip sheath. Maybe.

What i really want is something frame lock with a wharncliffe around 8 inches over all, thatd be a dream knife, i dont know of such a thing even existing though.

If you find somebody who will make you a cusotms folder for $200 let me know. on the other hand, you can get plenty of quality custom fixed blades for that price range.

Itd have to be perfect for it to be fixed, i never carry fixed blades, tried a eskabar and a couple others and they always get thrown in the drawer and never see day light again.

mostly because i wear sweat pants or shorts every day so no where for a belt. And i dont like stuff hanging off my side i like it clipped inside a pocket, sometimes inside waist band.

I don't know of a maker that can do an 8" OAL Wharny frame lock in that price range. It would probably be closer to 300-400.

^ throw that eskabar this way then :) i agree at the price you want to spend you should grab a zt or similar, i mean i personally wouldnt bother a knife maker for a custom of MINE unless i was willing to spend 500+, not that you couldnt find a cheaper but if your paying someone to make YOUR knife, you might as well have it done in a way that will represent you nicely. you want it to be worth something, so save that amount. imagine how great a family heirloom a knife you designed, saved for, and had made perfect will be.

On the other hand you can customize another knife with the 200 and have something you designed as well. just pick ur favorite then have someone make some bad ass scales, have the blade jimped patina it whatever you like.

Thats not a bad idea, and I could just save and wait till I have anther 200 if thats what it costs

sub $200 I'd just get a pm2, but what about a spyderco Yohimbo? use the leftover $ to get it modified to your liking and you have a semicustom wharnie in your pricerange
