Looking for an EDC/Tactical folding knife

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and this will be my first post.

I am looking for an EDC/Tactical folding knife preferably 4 inches with decent deploying speed. I've been looking at Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto(2010 version) and the SOG Aegis Tanto. The reason I went for those two options first is that I wanted something that is affordable and is Tactical Defense and Offense capable.
I don't mind spring assisted though I am wary of how long the spring system can last (as in the likely hood of a defect in a spring assisted knife seems a lot higher than a standard folding knife). My price range is 50 - 70 dollars but I wouldn't mind spend up to 95ish if the knife is worth it. Also could you guys recommend good places to order the knife that you recommend?

Thank You

Kershaw RAM.

Food for thought. Are fixed blade not legal in your area? Nothing's quicker than a fixed blade on the draw except for possibly a waved folder and only if it so happens that your fixed blade sheath isn't secured on your person (IE: you have to use two hands to draw the knife).

I'm at California. I'm looking solely at folders because I want it to be concealed at all times.

My condolences that you live in the People's Republic of Kahleefooorneyah. ;)

Well, while he can't carry a concealed FB, he's not limited to blade length on a folder (As some states are).

He can carry/wear any length FB he wants, as long as it's fully open carry, but that's not what he wants.

Some suggestions are great, but as the OP stated, he wants it, ideally, under $70 or so, with a possible top end of $95, IIRC, & basically wants a blade length of 3.5" or more.

I'd say CS's new Recon 1 would be fine with its 4" blade. The Voyager series, while discontinued for now, can probably still be found. Those are light for their size & you can get one with 4, 5, or 6" blade lengths.

I still think a waved Spyderco Endura's a great choice, though, as it's fairly light, decent size (3.75" blade length), & with a wave, deployment speed's about as good as you can get for a manual folder.

As for training, I thought that goes W/O saying. As a Trainer myself, I guess I took that for granted. Another plus for the waved Endura is that you can get a trainer version down the road.

Good luck.

Please reconsider a knife as a first-line self-defense option (unless you're trained in knife-fighting tactics.) So many things can go wrong, including ending up in prison. In California, I recommend some mace/pepper spray variation. It gives you range and even comes in foam or gel so it's less affected by wind. Tasers are also a possibility but they have their disadvantages. Knife could be thought of as a last resort ~ and simply running away, if possible, should be thought of before that.
Or, you could buy a gun (expensive) and apply for a concealed carry permit which depending on where you live could range from feasible to basically impossible.
Not to completely derail the thread, you could do worse than the Benchmade 710 though it's usually a little above your price range. Like I said though: last resort.

@harkamus: Yeah, just need to deal with all the limitations here ;)

@CL01: Thanks! I'm definitely considering the Spyderco Endura 4 FFG, since I've seen nothing but positive comments about it. CS Recon 1 is still up there for me, due to the fact that the pricing of the Endura and Recon are so close.

If you havent already made your choice, check out my value knives thread. You'll get plenty of knife for your money choosing most anything from that list.

For your purposes I'd say check out the Spyderco Tenacious, Ontario Rat-1, Kershaw Barrage/Salvo, Kershaw Storm II, and Spyderco Endura 4 .

You need something Emerson. Try a Super 7 or a 10.

The 7 is nice, but I feel the lack of a reversible pocket clip is somewhat of a downside.

I would go for the waved Endura, as it's cheaper, has the "correct" option of a reverse grip deployment, and you could easily write it off as a tool rather than a weapon. Only thing is that the handle + blade length gives me the impression that it's a little flimsy. Wouldn't be a problem if you only slice with it though.

Thanks everyone!
I've made my choice. I going with the Cold Steel Recon 1 because of the longer blade and it's thickness. The problem that I saw with the Endura was that the blade seemed a bit too thin. I hope I enjoy my CS Recon.

Again, Thanks for all the inputs.
