Check out some of the Entrek knives. They are kinda spendy and its hard to tell if the scales are removable or not, but might be worth a look. Also Spartan Blades has a few models that might loosely be considered a modern take of the Kabar (again, spendy though).

just a thought, the cold steel Leatherneck (even if the steel is crap) its cheap and does have a larger tang and more sturdy build but most of the options these people are giving you are better however seem to cost a lot more.
