I want to start a blade for a friend and need a piece of 5160 2 inches wide either 3/16 or 1/4 and 10" to 12". I can find most sizes to narrow of far too wide. tried aldo, jantz and a couple of others and they either don't stock or as aldo are out. I don't want to use 1084 or 1095 unless I have to. it is a stock removal job which is the reason for the width, handle has a drop and sharp curve in it. I could forge it but the stock removal would be quicker for me.

Did my choppers with the Jantz 1/4 X 2 X 18 & Peter's heat treat. 18" LOA & went with a 58 from Peters, worked out very well. No chips, no bends at the edge, about right for a big blade. For a shorter blade, 59-60 might be good. Good steel to work with, Jantz was good for the order.

thanks Kevin, let me see if I can work the 1 3/4 right quick. I tried jantz Friday and they were out of the two inch just had 1 1/2 x 18 or 36. I am going to check my pattern now. 1 1/2 I had was a bit narrow.

thanks, Kevin no way I can turn it to get the pattern to fit. it is going to take a min. or 2" stock. I may have to forge it want to or not. I have two in 1084 and 1095 but I want this to be a special present for him. I have had very fine luck with 5160 as far as edge holding and durability maybe jantz got it in late Friday I am going to check again I tried aldo again today and his is out of stock too.

I would Check Alpha Knife supply. I would also look at their 1080+ "might be called 1084+ I forget" It works great for a tough chopper and in my opinion is a better steel than 5160

I have 3/16" 6150 at my laser shop and could cut something in a few weeks. 0.50% C, 0.77% Mn, 0.19% Si, 0.88% Cr, 0.17% V. I also have 1/4 x 2 strips of high-manganese 1075. I also have some random pieces of 0.21" 8670 that might be big enough.

thanks for the offers but it has to be 5160, it is what he wants and so it has to be. I don't really want to forge this one but its looking as I may have no other choice. I use a gas forge and the temp control is me.

Stacy, finding a spring shop around here is like finding gold nuggets, just aint none. I sent jantz another email today before I left for work to see if they have any. if not I can wait a while longer.

Where in SC are you?

If all else fails, go to Harbor Freight or any similar place and buy a trailer spring. take it apart and you are good to go.

When I get back, I'll check my steel rack. I am sure there is 1/4X2" 5160 in it.

I have a piece that measures .26 thick its about 12" long. email me if you are interested

I live in Cherokee county, near Pacolet. county line runs thru my back yard.we do have a harbor freight store about 20 or so miles from here. I think everyone ordered all the 5160 it is hard to find in stock. I sent jantz an email yesterday and still haven't heard back from them. thanks for the help though i am about ready to see the local scrap yard has anything i can use. i know gm was using 5160 in the 70's for springs.
