Carhartt Mountain Cape Coat at Cabelas

I had never heard of Filson before. I have been doing some research on them, and they seem to be the balls.

These coats kick major butt. Do either one of you have, or have ever had, any of their products?

I am looking to replace my old Woolrich with something warmer and something dryer; and something more durable. Although the Woolrich is plenty tough enough-- having worn it regularly for 11 or 12 yrs.

I want to get rid of the Columbia "ski" parka I bought three years ago. It just isn't me.

I am leaning towards the Original double coat, or the Outfitter.

Gemplers.com has a Filson Packer Coat (item No. 21161) on sale for $136.50 right now. Unfortunately, they only have size 46.

Komondor-- I've got a Filson tin cloth packer hat, and I've looked at their coats several times, but have never worn one. The tin cloth is weird stuff-- waxed heavy cotton. It's very durable and waterproof, but it doesn't breathe very well, and it's kinda stiff. It also smells funny. I would definitely suggest looking at one in person if possible before purchasing.

Josh,

I was looking more closely at that tin cloth stuff. I don't know if I like it. It's like wearing Kevlar or something. It doesn't sound like it would make a good hunting coat either; since it has an oily smell, and it doesn't breathe.

I had been looking at their double Mackinaw cruiser. That looks awesome. 100% 24oz. virgin wool-- double layered and made to last more than a lifetime. Those are also quite weather proof-- and they breathe.

I would like to see their stuff in person; but I'm not sure if anyone around here carries their products.

Komondor-- here's a list of Filson dealers in Vermont:
Battenkill Outfitters Manchester - 802-362-5589

Caplan's Army Store St Johnsbury - 802-748-3236

Classic Outfitters South Burlington - 802-860-7375

Farm-Way Inc. Bradford -
802-222-9316

Sam's Outdoor Outfitters Brattleboro - 802-254-2933

Vermont Field Sport Middlebury - 802-388-3572

The wool coats look nice, and probably breathe better than the tin cloth. I think the tin cloth would really shine in situations where abrasion is a problem--pushing through brush thickets, etc. Hopefully you will get some feedback from Filson coat owners.

Josh,

That is awesome information! Thanks a million.

I will be in Middlebury and S. Burlington Saturday morning.

Thanks, man.

Even more comfortable than the Carhartt field jackets are their hooded jackets. Best darned coat I've ever owned and wears extremely well. Comfortable, warm and that hood has saved my butt many a time.

Take it from a guy that's been in and out of the barn more times than I can remember...Carhartt. I don't know of a farmer around here that doesn't wear 'em.

Another Carhartt fan checking in. They are tough as nails.

Thanks for the heads up on the Cape Coat Buzzbait.
Got one on the way.:)

Cabelas was out of Cape Coats in my size, so I decided to try something compltely different. I picked up an oil skin Driza-Bone riding vest from SimplyOz.com. It should be perfect for trout season in the Adirondacks. I normally wear a heavy shirt and jacket, but always find my shoulders to be a bit too restricted for proper movement and casting. This vest should help keep out the wind and rain, and aid in my casting a bit. I also grabbed some of those nifty flavored toothpicks while I was at it.

Hehehe.... Nah. That's just some ugly Aussie flaunting his oilskin.

Put a bass in my hand, and I turn into a big old hunk of man flesh, which the women can not refuse!!!!

Yeah, Filson and Barbour are nice, but if you really want something special, check out Lewis Creek
I bought the Stockton Barn Coat. Not cheap, but extremely well made (very nice liner unlike the Filsons), many large pockets inside and out, waterproof (or nearly so), tough as nails, and I fully expect mine to last forever.

I got the Filson double Mackinaw last year and love it. Very warm, wind proof, etc. (all the good qualities that wool provides). I've kind of retired a heavy leather coat that I really liked in favor of it.

That being said, if I were to be chopping wood or getting dirty, I'd resort to the blanket lined Carhart that I have as well.

I like them both, but for different reasons.

Thanks for link Buzzbait. Just ordered a Carhartt Mountain Cape Coat, XL chestnut. They were out of green. I had seen these in one of my older Cabelas catalogs a while back. Really liked it, but it was not on sale at that time:D. This will be my first Carhartt. Want to try their pants sometime.

Hi Josh & Komondor-

My experience with Filson products is with their wool Mackinaw Cruiser, which is a fantastic coat... Mine was handed-down to me from an uncle. I would love to get a Double-Mackinaw Cruiser, which has an extra-thick cape sewn over the shoulders. They are flexible and don't make any noise as you hike/hunt in the mountains.

I've seen their various Tin Cloth and Shelter Cloth garments "live" (both oil finish and dry finish) and they look like they would be awesome over a high-quality turtleneck and sweater. Hmmmm....I didn't notice any peculiar or oily odors coming from the garments. It is really a wax that is applied to the fabric, but it would make sense to ask Filson or the retailer about odors that might be intrinsic to this finish. I'll be sure to give a "sniff test" the next time I visit the outdoor sporting goods store.

They're also really good about customizing garments if you need to move a shooting pad to the the left shoulder (like me) or if you desire a certain garment in an alternate fabric. Hope that helps!

Regards,
