Hello all. I am in the mood for a "Bowie Knife". I would do a "search" here, but that is disabled for me right now here.

I am looking at spending at least 200 bucks. I want a user/abuser.

I would like one that would make Jim Bowie and James Keating proud.
(Heck, throw Bill Bagwell in there too.)

What do ya'll suggest? I am looking to have at least a 9-12" blade....blade catching hilt...etc.

Thanks very much in advance.

Thanks,

Brian

Since you mentioned Bill Bagwell maybe you should take a look at the Ontario Knives Hell's Belle. It is a Bill Bagwell design. It has an 11" blade, a blade catcher guard and is in the price range you are looking for. I know that they are available at www.1SKS.com

Bill Siegle also makes a couple very nice Bowies that you might want to consider.

I read somewhere that Bill Bagwell claims the steel used in the Ontario/Bagwell Bowies comes real close to the performance levels of his custom Bowie's forged Carbon steel in terms of shock resistance, edge holding and so on.

let's see if I can get a picture in here...

Dang! Alright fellas, how can I post a pic from my hard drive?

Hey thanks ZENGHOST:D
I could make you a $200 bowie we would have to discuss it though.
I do have one in that range right now however there is a $225 shiping and handling charge:D :D :D :D
just kiddin

I suggest either the Cold Steel LAREDO BOWIE that retails about $399.99 or the Boker Bowie # 547 about $ $275. Then again I really like the SOG 1 Bowie for #274.95. Buy all three, keep the one you like best and send the other two to me.

Hello Execution Style,

For factory Bowie's I think the only ones I have seen with blade catcher hilts are the Ontario Bagwell Bowies.

Hey, I know shipping to Hawaii is expensive, but not that expensive...

And he did say at least 200 so maybe now's the time to start raising them prices ;) (we can leave mine at $200, though :D ).

Seriously, though, you make one fine looking bowie.

Dude, you need to either post the pic on the web somewhere and link to it, or you can up your membership to be able to upload pics to bladeforums.

Bill does some excellent work at very reasonable prices, and he specializes in fixed bladed fighters and camp knives. Drop him a note and you will be pleasantly surprised.

I have an Ontario production version of Bagwell's Hells Belle as a part of my Bowie collection that I have been accumulating for 40+ years. It is extremely well made and it is just about the purest fighting blade that I have seen sold as a Bowie Knife. By this, I mean that is makes no pretense of being a camp knife or other sort of utility tool, it is a fighter's weapon and it is uncompromised for other purposes.

Forum member XRAYED has made some very attractive ones as well. I am saving my pennies for one of his now. Hope to order soon.

Wali, I have been looking at the mineral mountain line for a while (i like the looks of the Arkansas toothpick w/o the brass guard, and the White River bowie). Do you have a large blade mineral mountain knife? If so, how does the knife handle (I was worried about those big ones being very blade heavy and not to quick in the hand, but I've never handled one and don't know)?

I've got a White River Bowie with the 12" blade. The knife is quite solidly built, and I don't think I would call it quick in the hand, though it isn't that slow either- probably about what you'd expect from an 18" long bowie ground from 1/4" steel. The balance point is roughly 3/4 of an inch in front of the handle. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the knife.
