I am looking for a double edged gladius like sword that can be used for bushwacking, zombie invasion, etc.... You get the point. I don't want a ridiculous custom and it doesn't have to be fancy, any double edged wide bladed sword or machete will do, i just want to know whats out there, Thanks.

Let me refer you to the "short shortsword" thread below. In it you will find the smatchet... er sword you seek... :)

I'll have a couple of these available soon...they're designed as sword/machete hybrids. 1/8" thick 1075 with an 18" blade. (pardon the crap in the background--we had just moved into a new place at the time of the picture)

$160. Canvas micarta scales and convex edge, brass bolts. Professional heat treatment by Peters'. I'll only have two available, and there's a fellow that I've pledged dibs to if he's still interested. If I do more of them in future the knife maker I had do the handle work and grinding on them will have to charge a little more because they used up more micarta than he was expecting, but I may be able to save a little on my expenses in a few other ways, so hopefully I'll be able to keep the price around the same mark.

Understood--we all have our limits! Thought I'd throw it out there, though, at least! :D

If you're looking for something a bit more budget, I'd suggest the Cold Steel Gladius Machete or (for a slightly more premium piece) the Condor Combat Machete (though it features only a partial back edge). Shouldn't set you back too much for a nice piece of steel. :)

Thanks for the reccomendation, i might do the combat machete, or condor thunderhead. The partial back edge of the Combat Machete is not an issue, i'm quite handy on a grinder. Good to talk to a fellow knife maker, though are styles are undoubtedly different, your knifes are waayyyy nicer. The knives i make are from scrap rebar or tribal daggers from iron bands used to hold barrels together, which actually turns out pretty sharp cause of the thin metal.. well i'm rambling.

Pfffff...I'm no knife maker! :p Those blade blanks were water jet-cut from drawings of mine. I bought the steel, had the blades cut, heat treated, and sent to an actual knife maker to finish the assembly. I'm just the designer and the orchestrator of the production process. :D

Cheater Cheater, pumpkin eater! Actually, that sounds easier than whacking on a piece of rebar in a homemade forge for an hour or so.

I simply don't have the time or energy to commit to bladesmithing right now. I'd like to get into it solidly in the future, but I'm more of a designer than a maker at heart. :D

They're on the way, though, so I'll post up some pics of that and the other design I had done up when they arrive. ;)

What about the Qama by Windlass? I looks very much like a gladius, is reasonably priced. Might not come sharpened though. I don't have one but I've been looking at it for a while. Windlass has a rep for good beater blades. Just a thought.

Good thought! They've had that one in their lineup for a long time, too, so it can't be half bad.

I have the combat machete and like it a lot. Plenty tough and the handle is comfortable. Comes with a nice sheath too- great bang for the buck!

Are the Cold Steel Gladius out yet ? I cant seem to find anything but the trainer... maybe one of you knows a release date ?

I have a zombie in the basement that won't let me near the washer and dryer , needless to say my clothes are a bit.... ripe :D

must... have.. Gladius
