I do some 3D modeling in my free time. I'd love some feedback on how to improve the designs/hone my skills.

I know these aren't super original designs, I'm just trying to understand different geometries and features and how they go together.

The first two sorta remind me of the ZT 0770, just a tad bit.

Also it may just be me but i have smaller hands (size small in gloves) and when holding a knife that has that "point" in the middle of the handle tends to be where my middle finger lands. It makes the grip uncomfortable, but that also depends on the handle size, if its a bigger handle i doubt there will be a problem, but that is one thing to consider in a design.

Then a couple questions. 1.) will the pocket clip portrayed in the first picture be more slim lined? 2.) will there be some jimping on the thumb-ramp and flipper? 3.) is the material that will be anodized be Ti? 4.) are they manual knives or a/o?

Other than that i really like the designs and i think its cool you took the time to create these images. I also like the third knife as a nice slim knife to carry say in basketball shorts or dress pants. Keep it up man they do look good.

I think the first two look more like a Kershaw Clash, but that's just me.

Looking at the spine of the blade on the blue one, I think you should change the blade spine so that it lines up with the little recurve on the handle.

Err, yeah. That may not make much sense. I like them, overall, but I would like to see some variations in the spine of the blade, where it meets the handle. A different curve, or more than one curve, or something....

It's hard to tell from the angle, but the top one doesn't appear to have a stop pin. Definitely something you don't want to forget.

YES! Thats what was stuck in my head i knew it wasn't just a ZT that the handle reminded me of.

Thanks for the thoughts. 1) The pocket clip definitely needs to be slimmer/more sculpted! This is something I have fiddled around with a little, but I think it still needs some reduction or modification:

2) I should be able to add that very easily, I'll give that a shot.

3) Yup, the material is supposedly Ti.

4) Manual, the way I like 'em :D

I definitely see what you mean, I need to experiment with that much more. I have also played around with crowned spines/swedges. Here's one I did with a swedge. I was going for something unique with this one, but it ended up almost exactly like the ZT 0801 blade :(

Not forgotten, but rather hidden!

EDIT: I hid the front scale, but I didn't hide the detent ball! That's the little floating circle in case anyone was wondering

Of course ;)

The flipper on the gold sticks out a lot, some people may not like that especially if they aren't people that prefer flippers. I love a knife with a flipper on it. I think the flipper on the slimmer knife is right in the sweet spot of size. Also i like the design on the slimmer knife.

The clip looks pretty cool and interesting, gotta give you points for having a non-standardized clip on it.

Maybe I should try designing one with thumbstuds, if nothing else it will be something different for me to practice! As far as clips go, I have designed a couple of spring clips but I think the machined clips are much more fun :)

I say if this was to hit the market with all the bugs worked out, i know there would be a decent amount of fans of this knife. You got the Ti, bearings, flipper, and cf. whats not to like about it?

I have neither the skills nor the money to bring my designs to market, but thanks for the confidence boost :)

Well hay, if you keep doing the 3D designing, maybe a manufacturer might see it and like the design. If you look the 3D designing, nothing bad can come of it. Im sure im not the only one that likes these knives. Pretty much if a rep from X company sees it and has faith in the design it only takes off.

A thumb stud design would be something cool to see on here, if you go through with that i'd like to see that. Keep it up man

You could always find someone with a 3-D printer to print out a copy to test ergos, size, etc. It will be a plastic knife, but infinitely more enjoyable than a 2-D printout.

Not sure how your 3-D program output would need to be converted to work with a printer...
