hey guys and gals!,

i have had this idea rolling around in my head for a little while and was curious if you guys where interested in me doing it. if you are familiar with me you may have seen posts of mine about how i have had so many issues with the axis lock from Benchmade in my few years of collecting knives. as of today i have sent back Benchmade's about 8 different times since 2011 when i got my first. to my surprise many blade forums members had never has such issues leading me to believe that i had the worlds longest string of lemon's or i am wearing out the axis omega springs at an alarming rate.

my idea is to purchase a mini griptilian ( brand new ) and document it being carried for the next year. doing updates every few months, maybe a few cut tests etc... i chose the mini griptilian because i would assume it is Benchmades most popular knife and is a knife a lot of new knife users purchase for their first nice knife or first Benchmade. the thing i am honestly most curious about myself is seeing just how long it takes me to break the axis lock omega springs. ( i would guess less than 2 months from personal experience). i would really like to document my claims for everybody to see or to have a positive experience with the knife. so basically would you guys and gals be interested in seeing a one year long test on a Benchmade mini griptilian that is updated every few months? i would really like to know before i buy the knife hahaha.

thanks a lot! ,

Bryan

This will be very interesting if you decide to do it. I vote yes!

What kind of tasks and chores are you putting these knives through that you managed to have issues with so many?

I think it would be very interesting! I intended to do something similar with my Zero Tolerance 0801. :)

i dont put my edc's under every hard tasks. what i honestly think affected them was me playing with the knives semi regularly when i watch tv. but im not abusing the locks through strain under use. if you look closely at the axis lock springs they are tiny. that was the cause of all of my issues.

If you do it, it will be quite useful for folks thinking about buying their first Griptilian and probably interesting for knife enthusiasts in general, too.

I'm a bit curious about your statement concerning the omega springs. What are you going to do to the knife that will break both springs within two months?

another question i have for you guys.

do you want to see satin finsih or bk1 coating. i have a benchmade 5000 with bk1 and am very impressed. maybe you would like to see bk1 after a year of use too?

i honestly dont know. when i notice it a lot of times i will be looking at the knife and notice the spring looks out of place. i would check and what do you know. its broken! i dont tend to carry a benchmade with only one omega spring. i dont know how much i trust that lock being down a spring.

Got Benchmades. Use Benchmades. Like the Axis lock system. Never had an issue. Don't really get this so , sure, I'll take part. Hell, I might even pitch in to buy you a Shift key!!!

I have not had a spring break on any of my Axis locks. Not even the Auto-Axis on my H&K 14455 and i play with that one all the time!

Like I said in my first post. Most blade forums users have not had many problems from what I have read. But like I said I have had problem after problem. That's kind of why I want to do this test. Just to document the life of a knife.

When you have sent in your knives in to Benchmade eight times have they ever given you any input or offered an opinion as to what the cause might be of all this breakage?

I've been carrying and using BM knives with the AXIS lock since almost he beginning starting with the 710 and never had even one spring break. My usage has varied from hard use, very hard use, light EDC these day's, to some I hardly use at all and even a couple of "Safe Queens" that never really get used but in all cases I've never had a broken Omega spring.

I'm really curious as to what might be going on here as that seems extremely high.

I know when you return a knife to BM for service they send you back a document of what was done to the knife, ie: sharpened, replaced clip, blade, screws. I would assume if they replaced the spring's it would say that too?

At any point did they offer an explanation or opinion?

Again, that seems so high I would think they would take a very serious interest?

I love these kinds of "thick description" projects. It's bound to be very helpful to people considering this knife, and it's also just interesting to read someone's direct experience. Also, please include a picture of your first griptile kill!
