Looking for first knife

Of those I'd go rat-1. I have a skyline and it's a good knife but the handle is too small for my liking.

There are a ton of fun knives in the under $50 range. Honestly you will do all this research, buy one of your choice and then on impulse pick up the other one that you choose not to get. This has happened to me about 4 times in the past few months. = )

Each one is a little bit different enough to want to try something new. I.E. The last thing I got for cheapie EDC carry was a CRKT Drifter for $13. Worst opening knife out of the under $25 pack that I've tried but it has the best blade shape and ergos. So much so that I carry it instead of the Kershaw Chill that I had just gotten a few weeks earlier. I spent weeks researching and felt stupid once I got the knife in. As this is mostly similar to a comic book or baseball card collection. You just won't be happy with only one when all the other kids on the block have a couple at least.

And from what I've seen of some of the knife nutty's on the forum like 2 or 3 of each of everything.

Thanks for the advice. I can already feel the addiction coming. It's almost like an obsession.

I'll throw these in as suggestions though they're large (9in overall with 3.75in blades) since they fit in that price range and are well worth it if you like larger knives.

Kershaw Tremor and a CRKT Desert Cruiser. A lot of nice features for the money on these.

Glad you've started your collection!

You mentioned a knife to carry while biking, so I had to chime in… I run and/or mt. bike through the forest a lot, and haven’t seen many posts on that subject. So here are a few I’d target as ‘next up’ in your collection (the three I use the most when running or biking, given their light weight and other features):

Benchmade 530. Fantastic, under-two ounce blade. You can carry it on or in running shorts, bike jersey pockets or even dress pants and you will forget it’s there. (Not for heavy use, in my book. I carry it when running/biking or when I want a knife to disappear in my pocket, but not when I'm doing work around the house, for example.)
SOG Aegis. I love the blade shape … it’s a lot of knife for just 3 ounces. (I’ll confess it’s the only SOG that ever caught my attention… it did arrive with some blade play, too.)
Spyderco Delica 4. I grab this is if I’m leaving town, & only want to bring one blade (for daily use and running/biking). Super useful when off the bike, too!

Definitely a Kershaw Skyline. It's super light, has good steel, comes razor sharp out of the box, and has a grippy G-10 handle. What's not to like?

I'm also looking for a cheap EDC folder - have about $40 to spend. Narrowed it down to Kershaw Cryo or Spyderco Tenacious. Any clear winner?
Thanks!

Kershaw Chill is another good knife, I just regret losing mine since they no longer have thumbstuds as far as I can tell. I loved how lightweight it was but had a solid lockup, good grip, though with it being so light it made me worry about what it can do but that was laid to rest after my brother abused his in his job and it held up good. Unfortunately this was long after I lost mine.

Just some food for thought. As a new knife junkie myself, I like the functionality of knives but also the fun factor. That said a lock back knife as awesome and sturdy as they are don't have as much fun factor as a knife that you can open and close one handed i.e. a liner lock . That said something like a Spyderco/Byrd product with a hole, Kershaw flipper type knife or CRKT Drifter with its frame lock coolness are very fun knives to palm. I would personally consider the fun factor of a knife before getting one. The Rat seems to fit the bill well too. I want to just order one to have in the drawer. Its tough for me as I'm trying to keep to a limit of 5 or 6 folders. So if I get something I have to get rid of something.

I love my Cryo. If I'm only carrying one knife I like it to me bigger though. If anything I'd wait for a Cryo 2

Hi all, thanks for the advice...ended up with a Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara2. AWESOME KNIFE. Well built, uber sharp, great ergonomics. I'll have to start working on collecting other ones. Thanks Guys :D

The buck vantage isnt a good value, they are overpriced for what they are. I would say the rat-1 is your best option.
