What's up guys. Newly registered member, but long time lurker/browser.

Anyway, I would like to get my Dad a knew pocket knife for Father's Day. He currently has and likes his Kershaw Leek that he picked up from WalMart a couple years ago. I'd like to get him something that has at least a little better performance for EDC, whether it be blade shape, grind, material or all of the above. I was thinking about picking up a Spyderco Tenacious to see how he'd like the Spydie hole and comparatively overall to his Leek. The Tenacious is made in China, right? Is it as good or an upgrade to the Leek? He uses his for every day around the house duties, but I have seen him smooth edges on cut wood etc. Not looking to spend more than about $60-70 on this one. He's more into guns than knives, and seems to like his Leek, so don't want to go all out on the first one I get for him if the appreciation isn't there yet. I figure if a little better knife strikes up more interest in them, I'll get him a PM2 for Christmas or something.

I thought about getting him a Blur, as I have one and like it, but I don't think he wants a blade quite that size.

Requirements:
Blade length somewhere between 2.8 and 3.3"
Something that can be opened quickly and with one hand. (he likes the Leek's AO, but I'm sure plenty of knives open about that quickly)
Good slicer
Decent steel (wear resistant and fairly corrosion resistant - he lives in the Houston area (humid), and regularly works outside)

How about a Benchmade mini Griptillian? The hollow grind model with the thumb hole is a good slicer, and meets all of your other criteria.

All other except the budget range. At $90, it's about 50% more than I am looking to spend on this one. I will keep it in mind though. Thanks for the suggestion.

You should be able to get a mini Grip for less than $90.

Keep an eye on the exchange. They pop up there a lot.

I just googled the mini grip, they cost more now than the last time I bought one. There is still the exchange.

How about a Spyderco Delica? Definitely in your price range. Doesn't open as easily, but it's a good knife.

There is also the Spyderco Persistance. Easier opening than the Delica, about the same size, less money, and a good knife.

The Kershaw Cryo is a cool little knife, and spring assisted, and about 30 bucks.

In my experience it's about the same. The 14c28n might hold an edge slightly better, but it's not a major difference. I think 8cr13mov is fine for most tasks (unless your dad is just beating on his knife) and it will take a screaming sharp edge. Kershaw uses 8cr on their import knives. Neither is a trendy super steel, but they get the job done.

Buck vantage pro in s30v
It's got a bit more meat to it then a leek,
Way better steel performance,
Made in USA with unsurpassed warranty,
Large is 3.25" at around $60
Small is just over 2.5" for around $55
So neither is really that big, all come down to preference.

It's not assisted, but the flipper with a little flick of the wrist snaps it right open.

Kershaw Knockout can be had new for around $50, it's 3.25" with a grind that looks like you could shave with it made from a pretty good mid level stainless (14C28N). There are both stonewashed and DLC bladed versions too. The black blade version comes with an olive green anodized handle (not scales, they're handles on this one), if he's into hunting/outdoors kind of stuff then he might like that combination.

Rat folders are well worth the price too. I'd say the tenacious is my favorite knife for the 30 to 50 dollar price range. And also for the price I think blade tech has nice knives for about $20, kind of an underdog. For a little more then $50 I'd say a spyderco dragonfly or delica.

The Rat 2 folder is a phenomenal sub $40 knife. I've carried lots of knives in my pockets and on my hip and the rat model 2 has stuck with me the longest. I can get it shaving sharp very easily too. Smoothest "flick action" I've ever seen in a knife in it's price class.

Great, thanks guys.

Other suggestions welcome too. I definitely do not know all that is out there.
