Looking to buy a FFBM. I need a heavy duty chopping knife. If you have an alternative great chopper, I'm open to hearing about it. Ready to buy as soon as the right knife presents itself. I saw some tests about the FFBM and was blown away. However, willing to learn about alternatives. Thanks.

The NMFBM is a great chopper. Look into the Basic 11, BWM, and Scrapyard dogfather, which are all very good choppers.

Another vote for basic 11. Great handle comfortable when chopping, good weight distribution, and its cheaper

The beautiful thing about a top notch heat treat is that you don't NEED a fat FBM for serious abuse! On the contrary, I find the thinner FBM's (.25'', .27'') to be more useful and more usable due to less weight. You will never find out how much tougher the FFBM is than a standard .25'' FBM without fracturing your radius or ulna...or at the very least without developing a serious tendinitis :p Either way, you will have the toughest and most comfortable chopper in the world IMHO.

I like the B 11 for hiking and the NMFBM for the yard. The NMFBM is more knife than I need most of the time, but is an Awesome chopper ( allmost too much chopper).
The FBM CG with CBT's is my favorite all arounder.

I second all of this. NMFBM is THE monster Busse chopper, especially after you thin down the thick shoulder behind the edge. And the extra length over the FFFBM makes it a better wood splitter. But it is too heavy to carry much.

When the bug bites you it doesn't let go. ;)
Welcome to the maddness.
Good luck in your quest.

Nothing but great suggestions mentioned above.

I keep coming back to the NMFBM, as the biggest chopper I am likely to have with me. I love the MOAB, and the Gladius, and the other FBM incarnations, but the NMFBM really hits the sweet spot for me.

It all depends on the stock thickness, a NMFBM with a .25 inch thick stockis not heavy to me at least, but yes as you get thicker stock and some come pretty thick then the weight goes way up! So find a NMFBM with a .25 inch thick stock and you can carry with no issues.

NMFBM definitely... I'm going with everyone else on this one! It's a great chopper!

A tad too heavy to tote around for the longer hike, the NMFBM is more in the 'axe' category than anything else. It does do a stunning job of chopping if the operator is up to it. There are a host of other choices, but I'd suggest a good 18 inch Ontario machete for starters. As of late, I've been using the Condor bolo in 15 inch guise, and it works very well in the chopping role. You might glance at the various Kukri offerings as well. Both suggestions I've proposed will still leave you some green in the 401k.

Wow! Thank you all for the feedback! I now have another night of research ahead of me. Great suggestions and I really appreciate all the direction. I'll let you know where I land on this one. Thanks again. Amazed at the response to my first post!

I have owned many choppers. This is what I think is the order of chopper, weight not being an issue (ie not the best hiking and chopping knife)

KZII
TTKZ
NMFBM
FFBM
Dog Father
BWM
B11

The one I carry the most because I like long hikes and the others are just too heavy is the B11 or the Dog Father Both weighing in under 19oz
The TTKZ, KZII, NMFBM and FBM are awesome yard and car camping knives for chopping

Basic 11's the best, hands down. Actually, sore hands, but not as sore as it would've been with other choppers that I've messed around with.

I just came back from a trip where I chopped for about three hours straight, slept, woke up and chopped for another hour. It was my first time doing serious chopping as I live in NYC and don't get to do this much often, but I am still really impressed with what it can do. I dream of using something cooler-looking, like a Battle Mistress or a Killa Zilla, but when you need to get down to the basics, you use the Basics. B11, no question about it. Comfortable, light, strong, narrow and thin enough to do fine work if you need to (I was making feather sticks with it and, yes, that was also the first time I've seriously taken the time to make feather sticks). I was almost going to sell mine, but we've got a good relation now. I believe the Dog Father might be a good B11 equivalent from the scrap yard, and I know someone on the forum likes his more than the B11.

The FFBM of course is also good, and the NMFBM is the queen of it all if you're willing to go overboard but stay within what's feasible (there's a MOAB but it's not production, it's really rare, and it's expensive). But it's such a huge, wide blade that it's almost comedic for me to try and swing one around, so I'm only getting one for my collection. FFBM is more practical, I'd think.

IMO you should get one of the three Fusion Handled Battle Mistresses. I love the CGFBM but many believe the NMFBM is the best. The FFBM is the best looking/feeling Battle Mistress ever.
