Hello again all. Boy I seem to be indecisive these days, so I'm looking for input on what would look best. Should I put brass, mahogany or nothing between the ebony and stabilize spalted maple?

Thanks Stacy, but don't worry. That outline was done just to make sure the block was big enough. There's a lot of shaping to do yet once I get it glued up.

I do all of my final shaping once it's all glued up. I know most glue up the handle, then shape, then insert the knife/tang, but I haven't been able to do that successfully yet. On the last wa handle I did on a santoku that way, after everything set up, the blade was off about 2 1/2 degrees from true. That one is staying with me now....

I guess the original thread title wasn't too clear. Looking for material choice advise, not handle shape advice, sorry 'bout that.

I guess I just have a feeling you're going to get about as many different questions as people who answer on this one. And I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Handle material can be a REALLY individual thing. Some guys hate some materials, others absolutely love them. Some like brass, others would never want it on a knife. I tend to lean towards more simple looks, but that's far from "right". I'd probably just go with the ebony and maple, but that's me :). Looking forward to what you end up deciding on.

I would go with the brass, but depending on grain orientations, I would worry about different expansion/contraction rates of the materials, especially if your ebony grain runs parallel to the blade.

I like it. Masur & Maple like that are my favourite materials.
But with that blade, you should have used Zebrawood.

I would have told you to use the Mahogany because the red would have been a nice contrast between the ebony and spalted maple. But looking at the final product, I think I would have been wrong. Absolutely beautiful. Nicely done.

Copper, hmmm. Where does one get sheets/plates/ bars of copper?

The different opinions are here now!:p I like the woods you picked because you can enjoy the Damascus! I prefer toned down woods with Damascus & really wild handle woods with a plain steel blade!;)

Copper looks great but it heats up crazy fast. I don’t know why but it is a concern that I don’t have with brass. Your knife looks great. Now you have an easily copied template.

For bronze, I am partial to Atlas Bronze. You can get nearly any alloy and they carry some of the better forging bronzes that can be hard to find.
