Im in the market for a good pair of hiking boots. I saw a boot a while ago that was waterproof but also The lacing goes through metal hook and lacing eyelets, which are like little pulleys.
Anyone know the ones I'm talking about?

My girlfriend loves Merrell hiking boots. I, on the other hand, cannot stand wearing anything even remotely close to a hiking boot. They're heavy, cumbersome, etc.

I know it might not be what you're looking for, but I wear the 2nd generation Oakley SI Assault Boots. They've saved my ankles a bunch of times, relatively water proof (haven't tested them in a full on rainstorm), puddles, brooks are no problem. The good thing is that they wear like sneakers but as far as I'm concerned, they offer much of the protection of hiking boots. Good traction too. The downside? Pricey.

The right pair of Danner's or Redwings are solid boots. If you want boots that have a reputation for being the best, check out Nick's Boots or White's boots. I don't own a pair of either of those, but when doing my research I kept hearing folks recommending those two names if you can afford 'em.

I have a pair of Salomon XT wings that I bought in CO. They have the same fastening system you described and have gortex uppers. I wear them everywhere.

You need to take a look at german Meindl.

IMO they're pretty much the hiking footwear everything else should be measured against.

Ive got the Gore-Tex Island PRO MFS myself.

Hiking boots depend on your intended use.
They are built differently for different types of hiking.
The boot you will need for long distance with heavy loads over mountains are not the same as day hikes on trails.
You can go from a nice pair of work boots to semi stiff 3/4 steel innersoles

What and where are you hiking?
What weight will you be carrying?

I've got a pair of Merrells I've had for a long time that I love. When they bite the dust, I'll likely be picking up another pair from them.

Whatever boot you decide to go with, I can't recommend Gore-Tex socks enough! Get a couple pair and you're good to go...

I'm a fan of redwings and Oakley si boots as well, redwings if I'm gonna b goin over rough rocky stuff and the Oakleys for everything else... I'd like to get a pair of asolos, they look pretty nice... But I rarely have the extra few hundred dollars as much as I hang out around this place... :o

I own a pair of Zamberlan Baffin GT RR's that have been the best boots I've ever owned. I've put hundreds and hundreds of miles on them and they've worn like iron, never given me any discomfort, and were designed for trekking. Made in Italy. Great tread pattern, a stiff side-tread and heel for digging in on sidehill climbs, great ankle support. Not a hot weather boot, but for the other eight months out of the year they're a great hiking answer.
In fact, I think I'll find something they make for hot weather now...
