Found on at a small gem shop in cooke city wyoming near yellowstone. It had no makers name on it other than a circled bear paw on the handle. I loved it, but I knew nothing about it. At $375 I don't want to buy junk, the sheath was kinda cheesey so it three me off. Anyone familiar? I'm looking for a decent damascus knife for hiking into the back country.

Folding or fixed blade? Usually small shops like that sell at MSRP or higher. Could be made by bear and son. But no idea really.

I'd rather just get something I knew and trusted. Take a look at the Carothers field knife, the DEK and the EDC. Or if you want something more special, take a look at the amazing knifemakers on the board.

Here's the knife, and here's what he said about them. I don't have a Facebook account so I can't cut and paste. Is there a all known maker who makes something similar?

Hmm. Could be custom made by a local, hard to say I don't know anything about these kinds of knives to be honest. Did the shop owner not know who made it?

Its without a doubt a beautiful knife, but I would want to know more about the base steel used in making the damascus at the least. Also, what makes you want damascus specifically for a backwoods knife. I would think a modern powder metallurgy steel like CPM-3V or CPM-M4 might be more desirable.

Edit. I'm a moron, I didn't see the facebook post, was blocked by my browser. Hmm, I don't think I'd buy it unless I specifically knew the name of the maker and could verify more details.

I'd want to know the maker he is claiming it came from....if he bought many knives over the years, he would be able to tell you who made it.

I would not drop $375 on that knife. It is mainly a personal taste issue, but the knife seems clunky and not very refined, as far as grind, fit and finish...

Browse the custom makers for sale here on Bladeforums.

$375 will get you a stellar knife, with great fit and finish on here.

Take a look at Dan Graves work, or Phillip Patton, or many others.

Hell you can get a stellar custom fixed blade for much less here at the makers forum. I would definitely look in the makers market.

I'd ask the store for the makers name so you can do some research on him. The store shouldn't have a problem giving you his name. It is odd it isn't mentioned in the fb post.

If you have your heart set on Damascus, a custom from a maker here is probably the way to go.

It looks better than I expected from your first post. I have seen custom knives in shops while traveling that had terrible fit up for the handle pieces.
The worst part of this one to me is the file work. It is imperfect and mismatched to the corresponding work on the handle liner.
I would skip it.

Almost certainly from Wazirabad and not worth a thing. As richard said, the mismatched filework is usually a good give away. Shame on Cooke City Rocks for either intentionally misleading people (a good way to make money, but morally disgusting) or choosing to do no research and letting people buy fake goods.
