Looking for L6

Is there ANY place a guy can get flat ground L6 in thinner sections for stock removal? Oye Vey!

Kim: We had a thread on this subject a few months ago.
I just got in a catalog from Cincinnati Tool Steel Co. They have it only in 1/2" X 1". In the catalog they have a comparision chart with other company's names and the trade names of thier L6.
VASCO= NIKRO N
JESS0P= EXTRA TOUGH 4
CRUCIBLE= CHAMPOLY
ALTECH= TIOGA
CARPENTER= RDS
I have not checked the above suppliers to see what sizes they carry.
Hope this helps Bubba.;)

Unless L6 is absolutely necessary, a steel called 15n20, that has a composition and characteristics closely resembling L6 might be more available.
15n20 is a bandsawsteel, so i don`t really know if you could get it as thick as you guys want it, but maybe it would be possible for someone who forges it, to sandwich it together? Instead of making damascus, they`d make a larger billet of 15n20?
Just suggestions, if L6 is difficult to obtain in good sizes.
(Though, i guess my idea of forge-welding pieces together, could work with L6 aswell.)

Admiral does not carry L6. They have 8670, which might still work for you.

Thanks everyone for the quick response. The good ole stuff is just hard to come by. Time to experiment. KIM

You might find a large circular saw that is about 1/4" thick. I got one at the Batson's hammer in 7 or 8 years ago that Larry Harley had donated to the auction. It was very good steel and I used a torch to cut strips from it for making damascus with. The mill specs are uncertain but it would harden and had enough nickel in it to make the bright lines. I still have some of it stuck back somewhere.
If you are going to make knives from it by stock removal, you may know some one that will forge some of the smaller pieces together. It would be like a low layer damascus piece. I use two and three of the thinner bars when I want a wider bright layer in my billets.
