Hi all,

Im looking for a knife making supply store in Vancouver, Canada. Specifically i need scales and handle materials. I know there is a lot of online options but it would be great if i could see it in real life to help me make up my mind.

Thanks

Well hello fellow Vancouverite.

If you're looking for local exotic wood, try Windsor plywood in Burnaby or Surrey (I think Burnaby has a bigger selection). For epoxy, use west system epoxy from steveston marine supplies.

Send me a message of you have any other questions.

I'm over on Vancouver Island, but I've been to that Windsor plywood, and the selection is very impressive. That said if you're ever on the island, west wind hardwood in sidney blows them (and everywhere else I've seen) out of the water.
Also, KBC tools (can't remember which part it's in, but it's over there) sells Starrett flat stock (O1 and A2) and precision ground O1 from them is substantially cheaper than mill finish O1 from Canadian knifemaker supply. Western equipment (I think there is one over there somewhere) sells Morse marxman, and drillco nitro gold twist drills which I highly recommend buying in the sizes you need. I usually get 250-500 holes in tool steel before having to sharpen, vs 1-20 with a hardware store twist drill. I've used basically every brand and type of twist drill on the market, and those two are the best out there. Buy a small bottle of relton rapid tap too, it will make your cutting tools last much longer. They also sell loctite ea-120hp (my personal choice of epoxy. I used to use west systems, but found this to be better and more reliable in my testing) but it isn't a regular stock item and needs to be ordered in. For hacksaw blades, files, sandpaper, ect KMS tools is a pretty good choice. They also sell epoxy. Their 30 minute isn't as good as the two industrial epoxies mentioned, but it's far cheaper, sold in smaller quantities, and is plenty good for hobby knifemaking. Kms also sells Norseman twist drills for about $1 a piece more than the drillcos at Western. They are equivalent quality, and another good choice if there somehow isn't a western there.

What about synthetic, antler or bone handle scales. Where do u guys get them if you do use them?

I've never bought antler before, the hunting guides I've sold knives to keep me well stocked with Roosevelt elk. Micarta and such I order from a place out of California called CE plastics. Even after exchange rate and shipping, it's still less than half the price of buying it in Canada.

Bowen Iron...you live on Bowen Island and work at Ryan Metalworks? Howe Sound in beautiful, I have a cabin on Anvil Island. I'm just learning about knife making so I don't have a lot to add. I have collected some nice maple burls on Anvil, dried them and cut them into blocks and sent them off to K&G to be stabilized. Pretty cheap and beautiful way to go. About $6/block. I get all my sheath making supplies at Tandy Leather in Surrey.
Shane has been a great help and resource.
