Looking for Machete Advice

I will point out that chiral.grolem's suggestion for the Mora #333 is an excellent one--it would have been my #1 recommendation if I actually still had sheaths in stock. It's like it was MADE to go on a pack and it eats vines and branches for breakfast. I hope to have more sheaths in soon but since they're custom made and the maker is having machine problems I'm just not sure when they'll be back in.

I'm looking to pick up the #333 and give it a try on some hiking/backpacking trips. But I don't really want a heavy leather sheath. I'd rather have a thin and therefore light kydex sheath with a belt loop for the times you want to carry it around; do you have any plans to offer a lighter alternative sheath for the #333, or will I have to have one custom made?

Also, just to anticipate, is there any work I'll need to do on the #333 to get it to optimal performance, or will it serve in stock condition?

I already do the work on it to get it where it needs to be. :) I think you'll find that the leather sheath is actually quite light! It's 5.8oz vs 6.2oz for the kydex sample (Godspeed Tactical) I had done up. I have plans of adding kydex in future, but that end of the game is even slower than getting leather done. Oh--and the weight on the kydex is taken without the belt loop on it. ;)

Odd. My experience has been that kydex sheaths in general tend to be lighter, dependent on thickness of material of course. What thickness was the Godspeed Tactical sheath at?

Anyway, I'll probably just have a light weight one made from Kiahdex sytems. Perhaps even just an edge protector. Do you have many of the #333 in stock? I'll probably pick one up next month.

My calipers measure the kydex material at 2.17mm. It would be possible to make a kydex sheath lighter than a leather one, but you would have to design it around being as slim as possible. Kydex tends to have a lot of excess material around the edges that adds to the weight.

I only have a couple of #333's right now but will be ordering more once my Mora distributor gets more Robusts in. :)

Fortytwoblades has already given great info.

One issue, I have a magnum CS Khukri machete. I sure would not want to crash on my mountain bike.

If the use was going to be to strap it to a pack and bomb down mountain runs, I would deliberately pick a machete with little or no point!

And a good sheath. Especially if strapped to your pack or inside while you are riding.

The CS sheath covers the blade, but would not do much to stop a bad cut or puncture if you crashed on it with a sharp edge.

The CS will come with a very rough edge, while a condor will likely have a polished convex edge from my experience.

Slim design would be a given. I'm thinking thickness at 1.5mm or a little more, if it's possible and would present no problems with warping. For my purposes, a simple edge guard would do for the tool either being in my hand or in my pack. I could probably have a couple rivets and take the excess kydex penalty for the ability to rig up a field expedient carry rig.

Anyway, thanks for the info, I'll pick one up sans sheath soon.
