Hi, I just started making knives and I'm looking for someone to guide me in the craft. I have a few years in woodworking so I have basic shaping skills. I have gone out and bought a Wilmont LB1000 grinder and various hand tools.

I am a stay at home dad with two special needs children and my thought was to put my ability to work with my hands to work to make ends meet. I have always had a passion for working with my hands from being an auto mechanic in my younger years to woodworking. I am willing to work out a payment plan for teaching or work it off however I can.

I started my first knife yesterday and I realized it's going to take a lot of practice or a teacher. I'm starting off doing stock removal if that helps. Possibly moving into forging as time, money, and skill allows.

This is something I really want to get into and any help getting started is greatly appreciated.

I've just started making knives myself and I'd like to find someone close by me to help me learn also (i'm in Alabama), but I've just jumped in and started figuring it out by lots of reading and studying and watching videos! It would be nice to have a mentor, but you'd need amazed how much you can learn by just doing it.
Sorry I'm not much help - but I would encourage you to just jump in and give it a go.
Good luck

There are a lot of great makers here in Ga that would be willing to help you in anyway that they can. I'm right outside of Athens.
We have a Ga knifemakers guild meeting this weekend in Statesboro that will probably have 50+ people there and it is open to anyone.
You should definitely consider coming to a meeting we have 4 a year normally 2 in south GA and 2 in north GA. If I can help in anyway you can pm me here, email me at jsfleming15@yahoo.com, or call/text 7062471369

My daughter is coming home from the hospital this weekend so I doubt I'll make this one. Thank you for the advice though and I'll definitely take you up on your offer for help. I'll contact you soon.

I don't know if I would consider myself a "mentor" but I was where you are not too long ago. I'm about an hour and a half or so from you and would be willing to show you some stuff if you could make the trip.

My daughter is coming home this weekend from the hospital so things will be crazy for a bit but I would love to come up Matt. I really appreciate the help.
