I'm a serial knife buyer looking to gift someone a chef's knife around 8 - 9" in a western style. The recipient has used a Kramer Meiji 8" chefk's knife and they specifically commented on how much they liked how the spine is rounded. I specifically want to gift this person a magnacut blade if I can, but I'd accept other modern steels with similar properties.

Bonus points if I can get a few different blades:
* chef's knife in the 8-9" range, budget up to $400
* carving knife in the 12" range, budget the same, $400
* paring knife 3" or less, budget $100
* petty knife, flexible on size and budget (somewhere in between the aforementioned seems right)

I happen to be a big fan of Warther and have some from the 70s and I was excited to see they offer magnacut so those are already on order for me to try. North Arms looks interesting but I think their spines are pretty sharp. Any other recommendations?

I'd recommend looking through the exchange here at kitchen knives some of the makers have sold and see what you like. In most cases you'll get way more detail and better quality from a private maker than buying mass produced kitchen cutlery at the same or better price.

One of the makers on here that I have dealt with a few times and own kitchen knives from that have rounded spines is Robert Erickson. He is great to work with and communication was always outstanding and I highly recommend his work. He has a website you can checkout.

This is one of Robert's pictures from one of his kitchen knives that I purchased. I enjoy and use it a lot ... it has a rounded spine.
