Looking for my first Becker

Hi everyone. I've been lurking around here lately, trying to get a good idea of what my next knife should be. I've looked into a lot of different knife brands and know that I want a Becker. I love the designs and my CroVan Ka-Bar tanto has been nothing but great since I bought it in the Army in 2005.

These are my knives now. Condor Dundee Bowie, Ka-Bar 1245 tanto and my EDC Kershaw Tremor. My needs are something not too big, and virtually indestructible. Thank you for your opinions.

I'd recommend either the BK-17 or BK-10, from what I see that you have there. What will you use the knife for? That will help narrow down the choices pretty quickly.

Welcome to the Becker addiction! You can't go wrong with any of them, really.

BK10 Maybe? Or a 16 would be great too. Don't think about it to much cause once you get your first one, you'll soon have the urge to have them all.

Good luck in your decision.

The BK10 is one that I have been eyeing. I would like to retire my Ka-Bar. It would be a general camp, hiking, everything knife. Although, that 17 looks pretty sweet too. I can see that this won't be an easy decision.

BK2, BK10, BK11, BK14, BK24, BK15, BK16, BK17, and not necessarily in that order. I would say you need a BK9 but you said nothing too big even though you would not regret it. Looking at the knives you have now any of the ones I mentioned would fit right in. I would lean more towards the tweeners, BK15, BK16, BK17 if anything first. BUT when you say virtually indestructible nothing comes to mind more than the BK2 which would also fit right in with what you have. Give them all a look and you will not be disappointed with any of them.

Hands down, the BK2 fits that description perfectly. I want to warn you, though... it is a freaking tank and weighs in at a full pound. I have one and love it. I have literally driven it blade deep into a log(lengthwise, of course) and proceeded to beat it around until it was perpendicular to the log and then split the log. :)

For choppers, I'd go BK9 over the BK4... and I still do not have a BK7 as it's kind of a red-headed step child in my eye. IMO it's too big for small tasks and won't chop as well as a 9.

For overall tasks that you'd need from a knife camping or otherwise, I'd go BK16. You get a decently thick 4-3/8" drop point FFG blade with contoured handles and a nice sheath. It is easily my go-to Becker.

I also have the BK14 and while it is nice, lightweight and compact, I tend to grip it tightly when doing cutting tasks like feather sticks and I find the non-handle covered finger guard digs in my index finger and becomes uncomfortable rather quickly.

You've already got three great knives, as you know. I'll bet most of the recommendations that will follow will be a BK2 or BK9.
What tasks do you want it for?

I'd have to recomend the BK11. it's not the biggest knife but mine has pried more metal and split more logs than I can count. It's Very lightweight, and with a quick cord wrap it becomes fairly ergonomic. It's very affordable as well, considering it'll run you about as much as a bear grylls piece o' crap and is about a billion times tougher.

Again, mine serves double-duty as a pry bar. That should tell you something about strength.

P.s. if you wanna go bigger the BK2 is also great.

using the ka-bar as a benchmark helps define 'not too big'.
IMO, the BK-2 is 'too big'. It's a nice *length*, but too much metal to be a good replacement for that 1245. Go for the BK-10 or the 16/17, depending on the grind and size you prefer.

BK2 or BK16 would be a good start, but notice I said "start". Once you buy one, you'll be back for another very very shortly, then another and another and........

I started with the bk2 but i would suggest either the bk9 or the bk 4 as your first. The kabar you have is a great mid size knife so i would start big. Your next bk should be a tweener or the 14/24

(IMO) You'll absolutely love the 10. But, as an introduction to Beckerdom, I recommend you get the 2 and beat the ever- living snot out of it. The 2, will make you appreciate all the other Becker blades, no doubt. Good luck, and we all know that whatever number you choose, it will be the right one for you.

I would recommend one of the shorts, the BK15/16/17, since you have a full-sized KA-BAR then I wouldn't get the bk15 (they are very similar IMO). If you want something for EDC then I think the bk14/11 would be great! And like ^^he said " But if you want to do it right from the start, just get a BK9..." :D

I would go with the BK10 or the BK7. The extra blade length will make firewood processing much easier and you wouldn't believe how nimble these blades can be.

So many great suggestions, thank you so much. Doesn't make my decision easier, lol. But I think I have it narrowed down a bit. Between the 10, 16 and 17. I know i can't go wrong with any of them.

I was going to second Daizee's recommendation, but it looks like you're already headed that way. On the other hand, I noticed on the Ka-Bar website that the BK2 has an NSN, so there is that...

Ok, should have also mentioned that I gave away my SOG Seal Pup Elite to my cousin (in exchange for a brand new sheath for my tanto) because the handle felt too cramped for my hand. Would the 17 be an improvement over the SPE? Or should I go straight for the 10 or 2? I really like the looks of the 17.
