Hello,
I am looking for my first Bowie knife. I would like to spend around $300 or less. This will not be a wall hanger but instead something I can take into the bush. Any suggestions?

Thanks

If you want a Sheffield-made Bowie, try Reg Cooper.

Shine up a USN PAL Mk1 35, 36; or any of the other shark knives, a Ka-Bar, or USN equivalent.

I'm referring to samples that would be at the very low end of collectable condition- I have several that I have brought up to speed and they are very serviceable, and a historic carry, at that.

Also, any of the current Ka-Bars.

I'd recommend this one... But, at less than 5" overall length, you'd be cutting yourself short!.. lol! ;-)

See what I mean ;-)

Holy Moly... Now that there is some knife! :-)

Yup. Historically correct, but available in modern (and traditional) handle materials, with A-2 steel. It's made to be a user, not a wall-hange. More info.

But I would also second Tom's suggestion as well. I'm extremely jealous of his Scagels! :D

I AM MIGHTY HAPPY with the Cold Steel Trailmaster I bought a while back to replace a stolen one from way back. It is a cuttin' sumbiscuit and I do NOT mean maybe.
BUT, BUCK has released a new lot of their old 124 FRONTIERSMAN model knives and I could not resist getting one of those also. It too is one serious cutting blade that I used to clean out the Mrs' sunflower stalks which do take a sharp hard cutting blade.
DO not forget that A.G. Russell has some really excellent Bowie knives for sale by several other world class knife companies.

Absolutely love those Bark River Bowies!

I like the build quality of those Buck 124's really well. Very nice for a production knife!

I have a Trail Master too Wil. It's awesome, but being a used 1st gen, and a little long in the tooth, the kraton handle will have to be replaced soon...it feels a tad loose when I chop with it. Still not used to that convex edge either....

For users in the woods, the OP would be well served by either of these on the lower end of his price range.

The Bark River stuff is super nice!

Wish they weren't all convex edges. I want to be able to hit my knife with a sportsman's steel or a diamond stone in the field.

It's a character flaw....:D

Just at first thought : Crowell/Barker Bowie and CS Natchez Bowie. The essence, spirit and power of the quintessential "Bowie Knife" were embodied by Cold Steel's productions in a very appealing (and effiicient) way.

The Bark River Rogue is a nice knife.

Those Bark River bowies have always caught my eye,and i will look into getting one...Beautiful classic style and well executed by the look of them.....My preference with bowies ,is the larger end of the scale.........................FES

The Blackjack model 1-7 is a terrific knife for the money. A2 tool steel with a super sharp convex edge and a great leather sheath for under $200.

I would love to have one of those buck 124s.
CS has a VERY substantial tang under the kraton, and it's not that difficult to upgrade it to something more traditional looking.
Remove the lanyard tube, slip off the kraton, add birch bark, leather, or wood and it's like a whole new knife! :)
