Looking for my first Khukhri

One of the things that drew me to the M-43 was the handle curve, but I didn't even think about it possibly limiting the handling options. I really am kicking myself about one of the DOTD from yesterday.

There is always another day. Uncle Bill used to say that people don't pick their khuks. Khuks pick their owners. Stick around here long enough and it is almost eerie how that works out

Is there any particular Kami to request for my first one? I'd like the edge to be convex, but that is easily changeable, and a pretty forgiving sweet spot. What about purchasing options? Seems the way to purchase is different now that when first started in the stickies. Would it be best to order through the site, send an email, write a letter, get in my car and drive over with cash, stopping along the way to knock on the doors of forum members with beer in hand asking to look at their khuks?

When in doubt, email Yangdu at himimp@aol.com. She's a fantastic lady to do business with. The site has a lot of the stuff, but for a little more accurate stock count, just shoot her an email.

The HI distribution center consists of an area in Yangdu's small home and, well, Yangdu. Also, stock tends to fluctuate due to the political problems in Nepal. In other words, it's always best to shoot her an email asking about what you want.:)

I'll stick with my original recommendation of the 16.5" CAK, for all the reasons Steely Gunz mentioned.

However, let me emphasise that you really need to look at what you really want to do with the blade, pick the ones that seem like they'd function. Looks like you've done all that. Final phase is to buy the one that calls your name (kinda like what Bill said).
To get mine, I had to special order, which took a month (hand made blade, from the other side of the planet, in a month -- yes HI customer service is good).

As for ordering, email Yangdu.
I put in an order on Monday, and she said there was troubel with PayPal, and had me order two things from the shop that equalled the price. See how she wants to handle it. She can also tell you if what you want is in stock, and if you want to special order, how to go about doing that.

Hello Darteres,
My personal experience with khuks end at 18" right now. That being said, while different styles have strong points, my 18" ang khola chops the best, My 18" kobra is my fastest blade, my daughters 15" sirupati is very similar to the kobra, yet has a sturdier blade. My wife's 12" Ang Knola sees the most work around the property,( she builds natural fencing with hard, hard driftwood from the lake). And yet my first khukuri, a 17" WW II is my favorite, because, it is , to me, a blade of all trades, it can do most of what the others can, and well, just not as perfect as them.

Have Fun and Be Well,

VERY smart wife.

Kismet,
Indeed sir, when I'm having a conversation with someone and they call their wife or significant other their better half I refer to Holly as my better 75%. The fences she creates are very natural and blend until your right on them, during the summer, they keep deer away from the lettuce, beans and baby corn in our garden which is quite a task. The driftwood is like rock, it has no moisture and holds none, and ivy and lichen love it, also the fencing has an elvish quality about it. One day soon pics. Anyhoo, I made sure we all started with a Bura made khukri as a base from which to compare and contrast. I haven't seen her go outside without it yet : ), notching, slicing, lopping, using as a draw knife with heavy gloves. Many a times we've gone down to the beach and mom would go off to cut apart a bunch of usable limbs and pieces from a 600 pound driftwood stump. Keeps them cityfolk giving us the sideways eye, Mamacita is 5'2" yet the scene looks a bit like a berserker attacking a kraken...just waiting for mud season(spring).

Be Well ,

Well, after seeing today's specials, and tossing a few emails back and forth with Yangdu, I have a box sitting on my desk awaiting a trip to the post office. Contents of the box shall include a money order, some chili seasoning, and a few Louisiana seasoning mixes I like to use here down south. If you happen to be wondering what blade I ordered, well heck, I have to say that I ordered a 15 in AK and an 18 in M-43. :D

quick edit: the AK is a horn handle and the M-43 is full tang. I don't know if it's horn or wood.

Excellent choice:D:thumbup:

You're going to be really surprised how differently they handle. I love me some AK's...but the M-43 that I have is just......perfect.
