Looking for my NEXT EDC: $500 or less, with these specifics...

If you like your Southard pretty well, why not just go for the AVO and get all of you wish list boxes checked and have a upgraded version of the knife you already love?

I AGREE... it is my EDC, and has replaced my previous Sebbie and Zaan.

That being said, I love my Medford 187(f), and an ADV Butcher or Pathfinder would fit the bill as well. Good luck deciding man.

Not sure where they are as far as closed length, but they should be within your range.

Great points, and I appreciate the input. I really like the look of the Tolk, and can't wait to get it. I might have to pick up an AVO down the line as well. I think the Tolk might be a better fit, as I don't think I want to go any smaller than the Spyderco Southard, and it looks like the AVO is a bit smaller still.

As far as your other suggestions, I really like the look of that ADV Pathfinder! How's the action on it?

I would recommend a Curtiss F3. Available in easy to sharpen N690 or in M390. Mine is N690 and is the fastest smoothest flipper i have ever seen.

Sorry the pic is so small

The Fantoni HB 01 Limited edition is CPM-S125V. Comfortable to carry but looks to measure 5.187" when closed. Doesn't carry any bigger than an 0562CF.

Thanks for the new suggestions guys. I appreciate it.

I have been taking a hard look at the Brous blades Mini-Division flipper, and they are nice looking!

The other one I've been (re) considering is the Rexfor ZT0801. The one I had was the all silver stonewash, and I think that was a little too silver for me. The knife felt nice and the action was great, but the look just didn't do it for me. Now that I've seen some of the Black and Blackwashed ones that have been tricked out a bit on IG, I might have to grab one of those!

The Curtiss F3 is now on my list, too! It looks like they are sold out at the places I've checked, but will keep an eye on them in the future.

Thanks again for the input!!!

Slysz Bowie? Wonderful knife and it cuts better than the Southard in most materials.

PS! My Southard holds it's edge very well and it has been sharpened at 30 inclusive with a very small micro at about 40 inclusive

Zt 0452 is out now s35. Also the ferox if ferrum forge has any on their site he sometimes will knock the flipper tab down a bit if u contact them first.

Beautiful Southard! Where did you get those scales?

It turns out that Charr was correct on what the deal was with the edge holding issue: It was the glue/junk I was cutting through getting on the blade, and not the edge itself getting dull.
I did add the 40 degree microbevel on there, and that seems to work well, too.

Thanks for the Slysz Bowie suggestion, too. That was another one that wasn't on my radar but is now!

I am checking out the 0452 as it looks great, and I'll probably be pulling the trigger on the Pre-Order for one of those as well.

Finally MORE GREAT NEWS: The Tolks are about ready to ship, so the wait is almost over!!!!

Ferox is not turning my crank, either. I think it's the overly large flipper. I'm sure that works great but really ugli-fies the knife IMO.

But maaaan is the Ferox one of the smoothest I have felt so far! like glass!

Don't know if anyone has suggested it but you could also look into the Grayman DUA.

You know I've just watched a couple Youtube vids on the Ferox, and one Skelton vid explains the concept behind the large flipper. Actually in HIS hands, it doesn't seem overly large. I think it's just the picture that makes it look OVERLY huge. He REALLY pumps how smooth this knife is, as well, and that is a big key in what I'm looking for.

Hmmm.... This might be the next one after all!!!

it is a very beautiful knife

I have medium-ish hands and I did not find it large like some folders (such as the chaves Redencion 228). And there's a host of things you can do to it if you want it to "stand out" and not be just plain ti slabs ;) keep us posted!

Thanks again for all the replies.

What do you guys think of the Reate Knives like the Reate Hills Titanium frame lock???

They look pretty nice, and about half of my budget.

Any thoughts on those?

Reate (and Kizer) make incredible knives. Don't be afraid to try one.

My number one recommendation would be a Lone Wolf T2. Not a flipper, but mine has absolutely blown me away. I have a first impressions review of mine on my blog, but I haven't put together a use review yet. But I find my T2 Ranger to be so nicely designed that I use it for all kinds of tasks, like in the kitchen even though I have nice kitchen knives.T2innakitchen.jpg

Unfortunately the T2 is discontinued, and Benchmade quietly snuffed out Lone Wolf. But talking with Bill Harsey (the designer) recently he told me that a Titanium framed version with Titanium handles is through the prototyping phase for a different company. So these may be coming back in even better materials. But I don't know when or by whom, and I don't know how similar or what blade type.

I also really liked my Fantoni HB 02 (the little sibling of the HB 01), but it is not a flipper, even though it does have a small guard. If you really like flipping, the super burly detent might be a little frustrating. I also have a first impressions review with lots of pictures on my blog for that one too.

As another person mentioned, Fantoni has a S125V version of the HB 01 available right now. I've not used an HB 01, but I can say that out of the knives I own my Fantoni HB 02 is the current gold standard for fit and finish. I also have a Loveless designed Lone Wolf Integral Hunter that was made by Fantoni that is flawlessly put together, so I am a fan of their quality.

* UPDATE *

Well I have a few blades coming, and one that came and went.

The first I tried was the Ferrum Forge Ferox. While the flipping action was pretty nice, I just could not make myself like the overall feel and look of it, so back it went.

Now it's just a waiting game for a few I have inbound:

The first - Brad Southard Tolk. I wanted something maybe a bit bigger than my Spyderco Southard, so I have some high hopes for this one.

Next: Liong Mah Warrior 1. This is a full production built by Reate. I first saw this come up on IG, then watched Skelton's vid on it. Beatiful knife well under my price point.

And now we wait!

I know Brad has been sending out the Tolks as they are finished instead of just bulk shipping them all together, so hopefully that will come soon. The Warrior 1 is due out in Mid-April.
