I've been thinking about customizing some cheaper one bladed folders, like Camillus etc. to give those guys who can't afford the expensive stuff a chance at having a customized knife. What does everyone think of this?

Jake

If you are going to sell them, better get permission from the manufactures first. There are copyrights on most.

Other than that though, what the heck, sound different enough to be winner!

I think it is a great idea!

It fills a gap between production blades and a possibly unaffordable custom, giving the beginning collector a chance to have some fine craftsmanship. It is perfect for the knife buyer who wants that "special something" on a perfectly functional but less than attractive blade.

And it is also nice for people like me who don't have a shop, want to "improve" on a knife, but are hesitant about creating another mess on the kitchen table with saws, files and sandpaper!

Why just one blade folders?
Here's what I want you to do for me first,
a Cold Steel Black Cear Classic with Stag Scales. Yummmmm!

Hey Phil- Did you do that to me on purpose? A subhilt in stag? Now I know I won't get any more work done here today...

See you at the Empire meeting on the 12th?
Cheers,
Mike

Go for it. It's a great way to have nice knives at a low price. It's also a good way to learn knifemaking skills. Look at the beautiful work Frank Recupero does.
SAKs without then same old red scales are cool. I've seen them done in various woods.
Rescaling knives isn't difficult at all if you want to work in the benchmade stuff that are a piece of cake to take apart and put back together. The knifemaker supply catalogs have folder kits that aren't too expensive if you get the feeling you'd like to give that a try.

Sorry i mistook you for a beginner Jake I've never used the profile feature till now had to search for it.
Now that I know what you do sure it's a great idea. SAKs are my favorites of what i've seen customized in lower priced stuff.
Haven't in a while though. There was a guy I used to see at shows selling finished knives and pre cut handle materials for some of them but that was a while ago. In pocket knives in general nice woods would be great. Stag and bone is everywhere (done to death) but other than browning which used quince in a few of their knives there isn't much use of fancy woods that i've come across.
Dressed up and pretty is nice but dressed up pretty and different is real nice.

Jake I think it is a great idea.I think I would be as excited about getting a customized lower end production knife as I would be about getting a higher end non customized production knife.I believe there is a niche market here and I am sure others would buy one too.

A sharpfinger with maple burl scales just came to mind. It's always been one of my favorite patterns,

Jake,
It's a super idea & nobody should be concerned with the aftermarket improvements. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the manufacturers would be tickled with the results. I know the guy who finally gets the finished product in his hand would appreciate it!

Jake, Tom just hit on the Main Problem, not enough people here are familiar with your work and what you're are capable of. You have been kind enough to share some of your work with me, but Big Guy ya gotta stop shinning your light under a basket. Please, put up a site, even just a simple PhotoPoint Album. I know you're a damn PERFECTIONIST, but if people SEE what you can do they'll beat a path to your door. I know Frank Recupero, I'm a big fan of his work, but there is a huge Niche Market for you that he's not touching. I know you're busy (Heck, you tell me every 10 minutes) but you have to take the time to get this done.

I don't remember where I saw this quote, but
DO IT! DO IT RIGHT! DO IT RIGHT NOW!
(sorry MT!.... Hey, I just realized your initials are an adjective)

Please Jake! Get it UP!.....This isn't your wife talking, just A FAN

You're right on that Phil. I sent off an e-mail inquiriung about Jakes work since hearing about him by accident in this thread and he sent me back a pic. Very nice indeed.
It should be put on the web for eveybody to see.

Excellent idea sir.

I gotta second PhilL, put up a site. That is a niche that is begging to be both created and plundered. There are some inexpensive knives that I'm sure could be great pieces with the right handiwork.

PhilL's second great idea is sheer simplicity. Merely a Photopoint album would be an excellent exposure item. You can link to it real easy like.

Consider this a "thumbs up" from me.

Jake I think you have a real opportunity with this. There are a lot of guys that can't afford $300.00 and up customs that could easily pay for a knife in the $100-200 range and it being "dressed" would just make it that much more interesting. I think a killer knife to work with would be the Remingtom bullet repro's(Camillus). Take off the Delrin and put on real stag and other exotic handles, maybe a little file work on the blade and you've got a pretty good dressed up knife that should be affordable to the majority of Knife Nuts.

I saw some CRKT KISS on Bladeauction that were customized with jigged bone scales and they looked great! I cant imagine what some of the other folders would look like with really nice scales.

I'd like a stag handled SAK myself....

Anyway, this is a very nice idea and would make a great gesture to the knife collecting beginners, and the guys who don't sell their blood to buy knives!

Sounds like a great idea!! Would you sell them online, ebay, or at shows?? You could always try one or two and see how they work out.
