Sorry, is supposed to say "Hatchet" profiles. Not looking for chicken profiles. LOL

Hello all,

Just bought a small camp hatchet (Ames True Temper from Lowe's). Seems like a pretty good chopper after giving it a decent edge. One of the things I liked about it is that when you looked at the head from the top it didn't look like a splitting maul like a lot of them do. I'll try to find a pic to post but I liked it because the head is similar to a traditional hatchet even though it has a fiberglass handle.

Can anyone post some pictures looking down on the top of the head of a good hatchet. What I'm looking for is how thin the head gets before the secondary bevel. Just wondering if I need to thin this one out some more to make it chop even better.

By the way, I was inspired to get one after watching the "AtoZ of Bushcraft" video on YouTube about axes.

Thanks,

Charlie

Here's the Ames True Temper Hatchet I picked up at Lowe's. Not bad for $15. Of course I added the paracord wrap.

And here is the profile, actually bevel I guess.

Thanks,

Charlie

I like that Hatchet. Do you know what it weighs? My Light weight hatchet is just a bit over 3/8 inch thick at the top of the head with all stainless construction. Its not any heavies than many big so called chopper knives> However for me it's much more effective.

The head is roughly 1 1/4 lbs i believe. Having the fiberglass handle probably makes it a bit heaver than a wooden handled one but it does feel good in the hand.

As is typical the edge geometry was all wrong causing it to glance quite a bit. Nothing that a bit of time with some files/diamond stones, or as I did, a minute or so with a belt grinder won't fix.

Hoping to give it a good workout this weekend and will report back. So far so good anyway.

Tarmix 101,

That was exactly what I was looking for. Looks like the one I picked up isn't much thicker. Good to know. Think I'll leave it alone for now and see how she does. No big deal to mod it though since it didn't cost much.

Would really love to get one of the bit longer Wetterlings or Gransfor Bruks but I had a gift certificate to Lowe's and this is the best they had.

The other hatchet they carried by Kobalt was nothing more than a dull splitting maul. Pretty sad actually.

Your True Temper will do fine. It looks as though you have already, but I would convex the edge bevel with sandpaper and a mouse pad.

The only other thing I would do is sand that black paint off. It will make the bit stick something fierce.

$20.00 and you have a good pack hatchet. :thumbup

your hatchet looks about as thin as my hatchet, slightly thicker at the edge than my big axe.

mine chops just fine, even though i have considered thinning it out more. something to think about is that once it gets to a certain thinness, it will have a tendency to stick more in the wood and it will not be as good at popping out chips. probably not such a big issue with a smaller hatchet like that but something to think about...
