Looking for RC-5 SERE w/ Orange Scales

Smoky Mountain Knife Works IS listed as a distributor on the Rat Cutlery website. You will likely need to wait for comment from Jeff to get the answer to this question sorted out.

One thing you could do in the meantime is email SMKW using the Contact Us link on thier website or give them a call and pose this question to them directly. If they've sold it I bet they will let you know.

Best, Les.

Lots of potential directions here. Sure hope that someone who's got the inside scoop lets us know.

It did have all of the correct Rat Cutlery markings on it.
You got me man. I guess they were bogus and someone should be notified.
Wish I had a pic of them. It was totally an RC-5 SERE twin but in orange.
If it was a knock-off I do wish Rat would make some like that. I'd buy a crate of them.

BTW I did put in an email to the SMKW "Knives Live" TV show people to find out what the deal was. They state that they have a lot of knives that make it to the show that never get into the catalog or on the web site because they are in very limited supply.

If this is true, I hope someone can track one of them down and get some pics. I would buy one as fast as I could reach for my wallet at that price.

I think we would have heard about them first. It doesn't seem like Jeff to want to sell a sprint run through SMKW instead of through the RAT community.

That being said, only the man himself can answer this for us. :)

I spoke with Smokey Mount...this morning and asked if they have Rat Cutlery made by Rowen...the customer service rep said that "the only Rats we carry are from Ontario", also said "no, we dont have any Rat 5s"

I got the same response from them also this morning.

I just got an email from the saying they do have them and asked if I had a specific one in mind. I replied with the RC-3 and the Izula so i will post their reply when I get it.

Jeff just sent me this
"They are indeed a dealer of our knives and they have a RAT Cutlery booth in the show room.

Jeff"

Mike says they never made any RC-5 with the orange. He ought to know. SMKW also says that at the time the show aired, the only knife like that for sale was the Ontario ON9411OM / 4.5" Shiv. I'm no rocket scientist but IMO those knives look NOTHING alike.
I can only imagine that they sold a knock-off and won't admit it but why would anyone go to the trouble for such little profit.
My brother's RC-5 SERE black blade is his EDC and he saw the very same knife I did so I know it's not just me.

Moot point now as there is no evidence and I don't wish to bad mouth SMKW in any way.
I still want to see RAT offer that knife in orange though. I think they would make a killing on it. ;)

It is a knife for escape and evasion. Orange would defeat the purpose.

Also, I was in Smokey Mountain. I don't care what the rep said, but they have RAT Cutlery in there. I bought one. ;)

They seem a little seedy if you ask me.
I still remember when their catalog was full of nothing but junk knives and was printed like an old newspaper. Of course that was in the 80's.

not sure about the 80's, but I just grabbed a few machetes from them... seem on the up and up.

Don't get me wrong. They are great to order from but a little weasly in their emails.

As for the orange handle, it just looks cool. Maybe not in an evasion scenario but as a general purpose survival knife that you don't want to lose in a civi situation just hiking / camping.

Well, whatever it was they were selling, it looked to be a great immitation. Spindle indent and all.
