Looking for recommendation for wilderness knife

I went looking through the forum and came away with the desire to locate the BK&T Brute (model BK1). However, I was hoping to locate one locally (as opposed to online) as I have a trip slated for this coming weekend and was hoping to take it with me.

But I contacted Camillus and they informed me that they have not produced the BK1 for many months now due to the case supplier going belly-up.

Would anyone have a recommendation for a replacement for the BK1 that would be about the same price/quality range?

Thank you for your help,
-Neil

Hey Huntington WV! Going to the Pumpkin Festival?

I would highly reccomend the Fallkniven F1. I have a lot of the so called camping/outdoors knives and it is really top of the heap.

a smaller khukuri? 15" AK or BAS. Shouldn't be any harder to pack afield than the Brute and if you can snag one from Yangdu's Deal Of The Day it shouldn't cost any more than the Becker, either.

Frank

P.S. there's a BAS up right now for $70. Helluva knife for that price.

Not knowing where you live, I wouldn't know what kind of knives are available in your area. The internet is a great place to shop.

There is a Becker Brute listed in ebay for $86.95 + shipping.

knifecenter.com indicates they have the Becker Brute in stock for $109.95

The Brute is a really large and heavy sort of bolo, the F1 isn't a substitute. For that class of knife I would start with something basic like a Martindale Golok or 12" heavy duty Barteaux. A RD9 from Ranger Knives would be a similar class knife.

For a large blade the Ranger type knives are a good choice or a bolo/short 12 inch machete would be similiar to a BK1.

I would love to hear more on what you guys want in a wilderness knife. I have design some knives over the years on this and am making another run at one for my BOB knife.

I have so far 9 1/2 inches OAL, 5 blade and 4 1/2 handle, 3/16 thickness, steel - DC53, ATS34, S30V. Handle material- G10 or Micarta

I want to have one of them done for our CT meet and greet.

S/F,
CEYA!

I have found Swamp Rat Knives (or any of the Busse subsidiaries) to be just about the best knives on the Planet. They are differentially heat treated, which leaves the edge hard, so it maintains an edge, and the majority of the blade softer, which gives it more flexibility. There is anther Busse spin-off company called Scrap Yard Knives.. They are every bit as good as Swamp Rats and Busse's, but a little less expensive.

I like their Guarantee:
"Our guarantee is simple. We warrant your knife against any and all unintentional MAJOR damage for life. The Scrap Yard guarantee is on the knife and NOT just for the original owner."

Swamp Rats and Busse's all have the same guarantee. Speaks pretty highly of the Company.

I currently own a Becker BK1 and I msut say it gives me raw power of clearing bush. Do stick to Camillius and buy the BK1. You can try to search around the web for one.

Neil, Welcome to Bladeforums!!

Since the BK-1 isn't found locally, you can still stick with Becker for your knife. Check out the Becker BK-9 Combat Bowie. It is still readily available. For just under $58 at 1SKS (link above), it is a good value. It comes with an ambidextrous cordura-over-kydex sheath that has an outside pocket that will accept an Altoids tin mini-kit.

The BK-9 is not quite as long in the blade or as heavy as the BK-1, but can still nominally handle chopping chores and will pack a little lighter. IIRC its edge is somewhat thinner than the BK-1 Brute's edge, which would make it a better cutter/slicer.

There is also a tan version, the Becker BK-91.

I concur with RescueMike's comments re: the Busse, Swamp Rat, and Scrap Yard knives. I have owned Busses & Swamp Rat knives for years and recently got a Scrap Yard 6-incher that stood up well to some bashing. If price is your biggest concern the Scrapyard offerings are the way to go. If money is no consideration, big Busse blades can drain your bank account in a hurry. ;) FWIW the current offering on the Busse website is the Fusion Battle Mistress, their flagship big blade.

I have a Howling Rat and while I think you could run over it with a car and it would be intact, the edge geometry is awful. The F1 from Fallkniven, the Woodlore, anything from Bark River cuts way deeper. Even when sharp enough to shave, the edge on the Howling Rat is just not optimized for efficient cutting.

Kisertn is asking about a Becker brute, which is a big knife. So why are people recomending small knives like the F1. If he wants a big knife help him with a big knife.

Mate good luck finding the knife you want. If you can't get a becker, I would also recomend Ranger, Swamp Rat and Busse. Also the new Ontario RTAK 2 is about to be released and looks like a realy nice knife.

Well, IF you really can't find a Becker, you can really go with the Busse. There are many acounts of it being a good knive.

I'll toss my .02 into this one. I just picked up 2 www.ScrapYardKnives.com "Scrapper 6's". For $89.00 this knife is one heckuva buy. I also have a SRKW Battle Rat, Ranger RD6, and a Satin Jack TAC and dollar for dollar this $89.00 wonder is a winner.

The ultimate wilderness knife is the Tom Brown Tracker made by Tops Knives.
Also checkout the custom predator wsk made by red scorpion 6

i just purchased a busse bm-e and its now my favorite knife, but the busse's can be a little pricey. i also have a becker combat bowie, it performs very similiar to the busse and is considerably less expensive. Havn't made it to the pumkin festival as of yet Hollowdweller, though my girlfriend is bugging me to take her.
