After dealing with a bad sickness for the last month Ive finally gotten back into the shop and for the first time since Ive been making knives I have to much room? I set down today in there and looked around at grinders here, and drill presses over there, band -saws across the shop and wondered how other makers have there shop arranged? SO for you guys that have pics I would love to get some inspiration from you on how you have your equipment set up, This past week my lovely wife allowed me, yes allowed me to move my leather working table inside the house since its getting cold outside, so those are the only pics I have right now so Ill post them, looking forward to seeing everyone elses shop set up, Now I will go clean the leather working table before my wife gets in from work, lol

I built a 24' X 32' a couple of years ago. Before it was built I got a sheet of white plastic board and spent considerable time laying out machine locations using a 1 inch = 1 foot scale. I used markers that could be erased; in this way I moved machines around the shop until I had them where they worked.
When I moved the equipment into the new shop, 3 months later it was right where I had planned to put it and the shop turned out to be both efficient and enjoyable to work in.

Charlie,

Those two bottles of dye are a sure sign of instant death if you happen so spill or splash a little on the walls or floor.

You had better be very careful.

Didn't know you had a Tippman. Good-deal-Lucille. Hope you enjoy it.

Yep,better get a mat of some sort under that table, like Robert said,it ain't going to be pretty if theres an accident!!!!

You know C.Edmondson, that OTHER table looks a LOT bigger and has more room to spread your patterns and stuff around on. Your wife sounds like such a sweetheart that I'll bet she wouldn't mind if you just traded tables with her. Heck, she might not even notice! And it looks like she would be getting a much NEWER table in the bargain too. No, no, no. Don't thank me for the idea. That's just the sort of guy I am.

That's funny. I was talking to a friend (also a knife maker) and he related that he was doing leather work on the dining room table. He spilled a whole bottle of black dye on the kitchen counter. He now owes his wife new counters and cabinets!!!

I won't give you any bad ideas by showing my current awful shop layout but Grizzly.com has a neat tool to help design a workspace.

It's got outlines of most of the tools they sell along with generic furnishings and such. You can make up custom sized tables to represent any tools they don't already have in there. It sure beats cutting out paper templates and moving them around on a sheet of paper.

And I too have spilled the dye on the kitchen table. It didn't go over so well with the wifemate :)

Im jealous of all your room !!
Mines 8x8 I cant even get half my equipment in there.
My advice... always go bigger not smaller hehe.
What do you use for stitching leather together ??

My leather dye actually creeps from the bottle... I wouldn't like it in the house either!

I had to literally use every inch of space in my current (soon to be former) shop, so I did sort'a what Fred did. But I made my shop model on Engr Graph paper. I took measurements on my tools, and then made scaled cut-outs of each tool. Yea, it's a pain in the ass initially!!! But it's a pretty darn accurate way to figure out how to set things up. If you just have to move a grinder or a buffer or something, no bid deal! But if you're moving a piece of equipment in the 1500-5000# range, you can't really just pick it up, set it down, and see if you like it. You can do that pretty easily with the drawings though! ;)

The great thing about that, is I put all the scaled tool drawing/cut-outs in an envelope and actually did NOT lose them. Now that I'm going to be moving into the new shop, I just drew up a new scaled drawing of the new space, and can use the same tool cut-outs.

It was pretty awesome to have the old shop on one single sheet of graph paper, but then have to tape four pieces together to draw up the new shop. :D :D :D

Yea I keep a close eye on the dye! Mr. Dark I bought a Tippmann this past year, believe me I dont know why I waited as long as I did. Best investment I have made other than the power-hammer!

Lonepine, I doubt she would consider letting me use that other table, It cost what 2 of those tippmanns would brand new,LOL

Thank you very much Jason!!!

Don't have a picture layout but it's a 30x68' steel barn that I use litterally 100sqft of. The rest is full of tractors and implements that haven't moved in 30 years. Quite a waste of space I know, but I can't get motivated to clean it out. Wish I was half as organized as your rick
