I really want to stick with titanium or stainless torx drive.

I am looking for 1/8" and 3/16 thread lengths. I haven't been able to find the 6/32 in that size yet.

Anyone know a good source?

It's seems they dont make 6-32 in 1/8" lengths in torx.... Might just have to stick with hex.

Albany Fasteners has them in 1/4" length: 1070004 Torx 6-Lobe Pan Head Machine Screw 18/8 SS - 6/32 x 1/4 Qty-25
$2.31.

Assuming you have a bench grinder or something similar you can make quick work of getting them to length. Drill a #27 hole in 1/8" thick steel, put the screw in and press flat against the platen with 220 grit. Careful, gets hot quick. Dunk in water every few seconds. Shouldn't take more than ten seconds a screw.

If all you have is a flat surface and sandpaper it's definitely doable with the same procedure but will just take longer.

If you are doing custom work, making custom length hardware should be a no-brainer. You don't mention what head type you need but I guarantee you can find something that will work in stainless; you may have to cut it down a bit.

EDIT- Also, in case you don't know, flat head hardware (countersunk) is measured from the top of the head to the end of the thread. A 6-32x1/4 FHCS has a thread length of .153".

Electricians use 6/32 and 8/32 very frequently. As such, most good wire strippers have a threaded hole in both sizes that allow you to thread in the screw and then cut to size. As you back the screw out it cleans up the threads for you. Just a thought. I prefer the Klein tools wire strippers.

Huh! I was not aware of that. Ill ask one of the electricians at work about that. That might work perfect for me.

Good sources already listed...

I have the Klein pliers and they are really nice on most screws... the ones I use on my folders seem to need something a little cleaner though. I like to tap a piece of steel with a few holes and use it as a jig to grind everything flat. The total overkill method I use is 120 grit on the grinder... clean up with a few passes of 400 paper if you like then hit with a scotchbrite belt.

The jig only takes 5 minutes to make and works great to shorten screws. I customize every piece of hardware I use...

Excellent! This sounds like the way to do it. Thanks!
