hi everyone,

i'm in the market for a good skinning knife that would be used for skinning big game. i spent the last coupe of days scouring the internet and have looked at literally thousands of knives. i'm looking for a knife with a short blade (2 to 3 in) with a wide body that has a nice curve to it.

so far the one that i have found that seems to be the best is the new muela "mouse".

before getting it, though, i wanted to run it by you guys and gals to see if you had any suggestions or were aware of one that would be better. i am open to any and all suggestions :)

thank you in adavance!

jeff

I got a couple of KOA Muela's for my huntin buddies for Xmas a few years back and they won't use anything else while a Deer is hanging anymore. They swear by em!!!! I still use my CRKT Kommer Bawana. It's an inexpensive little sucker but it skins the daylights out of hanging game!!!

4 years i used a f.dick curved stiff boneing knife an just got the lamb legger they are awsome but little bigger the the 2-3"you wanted check-um out at 125 west.com.i carry the boneing blade in my pack to clean, skin ,an bone in country,or if i can pack out then i use the others

i think you can get the Buck mini alpha at Cabelas in their Alaskan Guide series with an S30V steel blade. You should be able to skin several deer without sharpening with that.

those buck knives are very nice too.

i hadn't noticed that someone had a similar thread going. you all made some nice suggestions. for some reason, i'm especially drawn to the scandinavian knives. i think i really like their fat round handles, as i have fairly large hands.

Byron knives makes a great little skinning blade and not too pricey either

You might look at an Outdoor Edge Wedge II. These have a thinner profile and take a very sharp edge. http://www.outdooredge.com/product_detail.php?cat_ID=4&prod_ID=13

those are nice looking knives. thank you for mentioning those.

i went to their website, but didn't see that skinning knife. i looked in the "camp knives" section. am i missing something, or does it seem like they don't offer that one anymore?

They are an jet engine fanblade manufacturer that dabbles in knives when they have time. Their production runs seem to be few and far between, but their quality and prices are excellent. Most of their stuff is 154cm, but the skinner, I believe, is 440c. I have three of them, and have been very happy with the two that I use. (third is a spare). When you can find them, the skinners sell for between $30.00 and $40.00 which is a steal IMHO for this knife. Ergonomics are great, grooved micarta handle as well as handle shape combine to afford an incredible grip.
