allenC, I agree with egroeg55 about carring a fixed blade in the woods. It isn't a case of making a small knife work for you (I carry a small one also, usually a SAK) but being prepared for the unexpected. In the intermountain west, it is possible to encounter both two and four legged critters after your hide (many marijuana plots). I don't need my handgun often but I also carry it in the woods. I don't need my car insurance often but I still have it.
I've carried a Camillus USMC type knife (both on military duty and in the woods). It isn't my first choice for a woods knife but will do and is cheap. There is a technique I read about in Tactical Knives where you can grind off the top part of the hilt and sand down the sides to make the handle more oval in your hand. I've done a few this way and they work great.
