Haven't bought a new daily carry knife in years and I'm somewhat overwhelmed by thr options. Would appreciate aome suggestions to narrow down the field

Requirements: easy one hand opening locking folder, no autos/spring assists, preferably 3-4in, relatively rugged, available for $100 or less, nothing with a curved blade as the only folder i currently have and like is a hawkbill ladybug salt, i need something larger and more versatile that retains a better edge

I prefer simple or classic looking knives with an emphasis on quality and reliability

I believe a Benchmade Griptilian, with the Axis lock, would meet your requirements and serve you well.

Manix 2 Lightweight with s110v steel can be found close to that price.

Define "classic". You talking something traditional, like a Buck 110 or a Case Trapper lock (both available with thumbstuds) or like generic-modern-griptilerco type knives?

One that just occurred to me, maybe the Boker Plus Marlowe Bullpup? VG-10 doesn't have fantastkc edge retention, but it's good stuff, and the knife definitely has a bit more of a classic look to it.

A Grip or Mini Grip would fit the bill nicely.

Can't go wrong with a Delica or Endura either.

Both. the grip/mini grip and a few variations of a trapper are on my list. I have a buck 110 without the thumbstud actually, but i find it too heavy/bulky for daily use. more of a utility knife that mostly lives in a drawer.

H&K axis folder 14715 in d2 steel w/ g10 scales

These knives (the mini axis and full-size axis variants) are hidden gems, IMO. Quality materials, steel, and axis lock for right at $100.

Good luck in your search!

I've got a Case Trapperlock w/ Clip and it's a nice little knife. No as rugged as some more moderns folders but will take some abuse. The blade seems to hold an edge pretty well.

+1 on this recommendation.
Mini or full size, and there are a few blade shape options as well.

looking at the benchmade grip, is there a consensus on if the spyderco style hole or the thumbstud is better?

tfu - I suggest you EDC a fixed blade. I never considered it....until I did, & I've never looked back. I don't know where you live, but here in my neck of the woods in No. CA, there's no open carry length limits or otherwise, so it's relatively easy for me to do so.

Spyderco Manix 2. Keeping it under $100 gives you the lightweight version with CTS-BD1. For a little bit heavier duty, add $20 and get the all black G10 version with CPM-S30V. Unskeletonized liners/G10, so it weighs significantly more than the LW version, but will be all around more solid under heavier use. Or previously mentioned by jascolli, $10 more gives you FRN (lightweight version) scales with a CPM-S110V steel, superior to any other blade offered on the Manix 2.
