i have an a2 blade i made at work (on a Saturday when i wasn't supposed to be working. yes, i had permission, more or less), but i have no means of heat treating it. i was really hoping that there might be someone on the forums who could help me out or point me in the direction of someone who can. any advice as to who i might try to contact?
thanks

Brad Stallsmith at www.petersheattreat.com Awesome to work with and fast. A2 runs $8 plus S&H I believe, but he can quote you direct. His email is bstallsmith

Paul Bos can heat treat A2 and pretty much any air hardening steels. He heat treats all of buck knives, Strider, Mike Snody's knives, etc etc. I think a single blade would run about $14.00 minimum depending on the size I suppose + shipping back to you. Or you can have up to 20 blades heat treated for $70.00 + shipping back to you.

The man has been heat treating for a long time and knows his stuff!

you guys rock. i will immediately start making some calls and emails. i looked around trying to select the right forum for this post but guess i got the wrong one. thanks for the relocation. any one who does m42...
i've got one made out of this that's been sitteng for a year or so. the industrial places are out of control for price.

i contacted him, and not only did he respond very promptly his prices are very reasonable. unfortunately he won't touch my poor m42.
oh well, he'll get the a2 blade in a few days...

What kind of tool steel is M42? Oil? No idea what that is! Perhaps I shall check my tool steel books if I can find them! I know my lenox bandsaw blades are made of M42! They cut like MAD!

oh it's very evil stuff. you can run it up to around 65 Rc and still have a usable edge. and it grinds like total crap once it's hard. i took a pass on a surface grinder with this stuff one time and it got bigger. swear to god.
but seriously, i used to work for a place that made high speed roll thread dies out of the stuff and it is like a rock. i love it but it's terrible to work with both pre and post heat treat

I think for the short blades that Phill Hartsfield use to make for customers, he said he got them to RC70 and left them that that hard as there was not enough leverage in order to use it as prybar to break it in half.

I just read the crucible site, guess maybe Phill was pulling my leg with that extra 2 points of RC.
