I am just getting into knives and just joined this forum. Can anyone direct me to maybe a Sticky that has information on the terms used. I am learning and understand some of the language and terms but would like to learn more. Thanks
Dave
Welcome. There is no sticky like that here. Too much work to maintain, and probably too many argumentative knife geeks like myself. (The Wharncliffe blade in the photo is incorrect.)
The Knife Encyclopedia on agrussell.com is a great place.
The Wharncliffe should have an edge parallel to the handle no? At least to my untrained eyes that's what stands out about that blade pictured above looks like the edge ascends upward.
Haven't heard of the "Needle Point", that is simply a knife with a very fine tip with a dual distal taper to my eyes. THe Speak point in the post above is also a dagger just like the Needle point.
For me, the wharncliffe blade pictured on AG Russell's website pretty much defines the blade shape. It is the last one on the page. My Spyderco Kiwi 4 has a wharncliffe blade. Useful little knife for me.
The one that always twists my thinking is the difference between a pen and a spey blade shape. i'm usually wrong in my thinking, so always refer to AG Russell's site. http://agrussell.com/encyclopedia/blade-shapes
There are some errors in the above diagram. I'll offer this one. As a caution I've seen knife term simply appear (made up) and are taken as a legitimate term. Just knowing some of the basic ones are enough. This diagram is of a hollow grind blade, slight drop point with a full tang. DM
"Straight back" aka trailing point (sometimes a trailing point will have a tip located above the handle, where the tip is "trailing" the hand on a pass straight down)
