i am on the market for a sturdy tactical type knife in the $125 +/-- range. i am really looking for a framelock design as i love hinder's and striders but just cant afford one. are ther any bombproof knves with framelocks out there for <125 or so?? or any other realy sturdy tactical knives in the range of 70-125 that you suggest with a 3-4 inch blade? pics would help... thanks!

if you want a bombproof knife in that range zero tolerance makes a few folders that might fit your needs. Their frame lock is a bit more than your price range though. That 300 series is a strider design, its heavy but its nice.

I might also suggest the benchmade 520, 710, 913 since these are my personal favorite designs. Again they have some stuff just out of your range that would be super too (615 or 635).

And spyderco has their military. I know its a liner lock, but I wouldnt mind having it in that sort of situation.

And emerson has their mini commander avaiable in that range. Super knife that.

And they might be cheap but check out chad los banos' knife designs for boker. He also has a pretty interesting perspective on self defense knives on his site that is worth reading!

Isn't the 300 series pushing $250-$300 bucks?

Kershaw OD-1. Great knife, G10 and a framelock. $40 at Walmart, insane value imo.

Kershaw Shallot. AO and a bit bigger than the OD1 but also more expensive.

I EDC a Kershaw Shallot s110v and love it. Its my first Frame lock. About $75.

Solid knife, feels great in the hand and in the pocket... nice blade size, good weight (about 4 oz.), but is very slim so you don't even notice it in your pocket. Great deployment, and locks up solid.

Purchased a ZT-350 and a the Shallot at the same time... But I find myself always carrying the Shallot. The ZT is cool, but I guess its kinda gimmicky, lots of weight and bulk for the size of the blade. Thinking about e-bay already... No point in keeping a knife Im not going to carry.

i never even realized the shallot was a framelock. i have always seen kershaws as more of gentlemans folders. can anyone attest to the strength of the lock on the shallot? any pro's or cons of the design or ideas from those of you who own one?

Retail is a little over $200. It can normally be had here on the forums for $160-180. Nevertheless, still out of his budget.

I'd recommend a Zero Tolerance 350. It's the mini version of the 300 series, which is a Strider/Onion collaboration. It is a liner lock but the liners are so thick that they rival most frame locks. The ZT 350 can normally be bought for around $110-120.

i never thought of it in that way, zt's being framelocks with scales. are the locks on the 200's really as thick as say the shallot or other kershaw framelocks?

Although the JYD II,...*snip*.. (great links by the way )

Some JYDIIs aren't frame lock, the G10 and the composite version for instance, but ejjktm may get lucky and be able to find a good deal on a Ti SG2 JYDII.

Yes. They are the same size or thicker as the JYD II, Shallot, G10 Tyrade and Storm models. I have a number of Shallots, Storms and JYD IIs. As Spiral said the Ti JYD II is also a great knife with a thick Ti frame and great steel. They are all very durable knives and have seen heavy use. I think that the JYD II and ZT are even more durable with the addition of the scales. The G10 Tyrade is the same but has a blade even thicker than the Shallot or JYD II. They can all be had in your price range and are a great value.

so i think i've narrowed it down to the zt 200 or kershaw tyrade. Anybody own or seen them both and have an idea of which has a stronder/ thicker liner? any opinions on which would be a better knife for me?

Well within your budget and framelocks:

Kershaw Storm & Storm II and Shallot.
Boker M-Type.

I could recommend a G-10 Tyrade. I've been carrying one for a few weeks now and it has seen some pretty heavy use one the weekends with some moderate use during the week. It's a very stout, very comfortable knife.

I measured the liner to be a hair over 1/16".

Which is the same thickness as the Shallot.

The Shallot, to me, make a near perfect EDC since I put a low ride clip on it. Though it is a little slick, the new clip puts my grip right in line to draw it from my pocket, pop it open, and the contours of the handle make for a positive grip. You can get a 110v shallot, have STR make you a low ride clip and still have money left to pick up an OD-1.
