Hi AC - welcome to an addiction! - I'll add my .02 for the Gerber's only I like the L.S.T. had one for about 15 years .. light thin, easy to carry and enough blade for most daily stuff- for about 18-20 bucks! The EZ outs are good too- but abit thicker and have a metal clip rather than the glass filled plastic on the LST. hence easier on pants pockets. A strong other choice is in the Spyderco line - Delicas are super knives - I'd keep to a plain edge for ease of sharpening and it "looks less intimidating" to non-knife people. Schrade's are good - so are the Case lights
My thoughts would be to pick up an inexpensive knive - NOT A CHEAPIE! by a known maker - carry it and use it to see if that's the style you like - then go from there.. I've still got my first L.S.T. along with a bunch of others... Knives seem to breed like rabbits! - Have fun enjoy and Welcome !

Don't wrestle with the hogs - they enjoy it and you get dirty !
