I am looking for the best fixed blade production (non-custom/handmade) knife. My requirements are:

Blade Length = 4-4.5" (total)
Blade Design = Drop Point
Steel = D2; 154CM; S30V; VG10 or similar
Hardness = 59 plus the higher the better
Sheath = Leather preferably
Handle = Natural eg wood stag preferably

I have looked at the BM Nimravus (too big) and the Nimravus Cub (too small).

Any suggestions?

You didn't mention your intended use(s) for this knife, but I would suggest something from Bob Dozier. He makes incredible knives out of D2 in various configurations for hunting, skinning, self defense, and utility. Bob is an exceptional gentleman and it is a pleasure to work with him on specing out a custome knife.

You may also want to check the AG Russell website to see which of Bob's knives they have in stock for immediate delivery. I'm sure you'll get other rec's for Bob and his knives... can't say enough good things about the man and his work.

If I were limited to just one fixed blade, it would be a Dozier.

Intended use - Utility inc hunting/fishing; outdoor/camping etc. I already have a Dozier and have a "Gentlemans" on order. I agree with everything you say about Bob and his knives. The aim of my inquiry is 2fold: I am a knife dealer and I am trying to come up with the best production fixed blade to add to my line. The other aim is to add a knife to my users collection and give it a thorough test out before I decide to add it to the shop line.

If you want the knife for hunting/brushcraft/outdoors use, look into Bark River. The blades are A2 tool steel with a RC hardness of 59-60, and you can get them in a wide variety of handle materials.

I would suggest either Marble Arms or Ken Warner/Blackjack. Both have knives that would match your requirements and they are excellent production pieces.

I am sorta on the same quest too, bro. :D I am thinking about a CRK Mk VI. A2 steel, 4.5 inches blade length and leather sheath.

Buck Vanguard Alaskan Guide From Cabela's (CPM S30V).

Thanks, Vassili

Ups! They will not ship it in Australia I am afraid...

Thanks, Vassili.

Busse, maybe Eric Fehrman, Mad Dog is very good, but all super $$$. I really like my Kabar USMC in D2 and my Al Mar Operator in S30V. Both about $100-$150 respectively.

Do you know if that Buck in S30V is part of their regular lineup or a special for Cabelas?

It is special edition for Cabela's, I think. And Cabelas do not send it abroad because it is "letal weapon"... But this is good deal - less then $90, very comfortable handle. And as I understand it looks like perfect for hunter and time proven also.

Thanks, Vassili.

B.T.W. Nivramus -140 is actually not quite a big knife.

Jdee - have you checked out the Fallkniven line? Some very nice working knives in VG-10. Looks to be some excellent designs for outdoors use.

Thanks for the info - for my sake I hope the rest of the knife selling fraternity doesn't follow Cabelas lead. From my experience there are some US companies who just can't be bothered with overseas companies. Those companies I do deal with (and I get most of my knives from them) are only too happy to meet my needs and are most obliging.

Re the Nivramus - the reason I ruled it out is that it has a 4.5" cutting edge - I prefer a maximum of 4" but I still might end up getting one - I have both it and the Cub in the shop maybe I'm being pedantic but the Nivramus is just that little bit over to be really comfortable.

Let me just show this knives:

Bark River Forager - A2, and they have some with full tang
Very thick - .217"

If you are looking for some nice but expensive knives, look at some Mad Dogs. They come in many sizes, but that have a wait and are very pricy.

This one is bit bigger but handforged and zonetempered carbonsteel for 85 eur 5mm thick flatgrinded full width.
Very comfortable:

Highly recommended by Russian hunters.

I would say that you are looking for a Benchmade 190 Drop Point Hunter. It meets all of your specs, except that the steel is 440C (but the way Benchmade does 440c, it's a pretty darn good steel anyway...).
