Looking for the best large EDC folder

After about two years of playing with motorcycles and fine watches I have found my way back to the knife world. The only knife I still have is a small Sebenza, so I'm looking to buy a large folder (3.5" to 4" blade) that can be carried on a regular basis. I like folders with strong locks like the frame lock or AXIS lock. The blade needs to have a plain edge and a geometry suitable to numerous cutting tasks. Also, the knife should be slim enough for easy carry (no Strider AR). I'm open to custom or production and prefer a "tactical" style knife. My price range is $450 or less. What knives should I look at that meet these requirements?

The Benchmade 805 or 806 is what you are looking for.

If you like the small Sebenza, you'll probably like the large model, too. It's not "tactical", but it is tough as nails. Otherwise, there are a whole host of customs that would fit the bill: the Hinderer Firetac springs immediately to mind, for example.

Spyderco Military. Nice knife and gets you more or less $300 for change.

Well, of course there is the large Sebenza. Always a solid choice, I love my large classic, goes really well with my small regular. But with a $450 price range your into plenty of customs as well. I would take a look framelocks from the following makers:
Obenauf
JL Williams
Lightfoot
JW Smith
RJ Martin
Hinderer
DDR

I know there are a lot of others but those are the ones I'm coming up with off hand. I have linerlocks from Obenauf, JW Smith, JL Williams and Greg Lightfoot and they are all great. I have my first Hinderer on the way and it will also be my first custom framelock. From what I have heard from others Hinderer does one of the best framelocks out there. Scott Cook is another one but his prices are up in the $500 range I beleive.

For $450 you could buy a custom or commision one made to your desires.

Or, like what other people said, a BM 805, 710, or Spyderco Military and spend the $300 leftover on beer or hookers or something. :D

If you going with that budget I would say Firetac Extreme (4.25" blade) or the RJ Martin Avenger, Devastator, or Trooper. All three go at 4.25" blades in S30V. Devastator is my favorite....................probably because I have one!! :D  Check with www.robertsoncustomcutlery.com for RJ's folders. I think www.edcknives.com has a Firetac Extreme.

Yeah, or you could go for a Benmade Ares, or 520, and then spend the rest on beer and hookers. :)

I was looking for the same thing, picked up a Benchmade 806 AFCK and I like it a lot. Feels smaller than it is in my pocket, the blade is wicked sharp, and has a great overall feel in the hand.

Kevin, I would recommend either the Buck 110 Folder or the Smith and Wesson Large S.W.A.T. knife. The Buck 110 is a great all around knife. for my EDC, i switch off between my Buck and my SWAT. Personally, i like the smith and wesson better because it is lighter than the buck. it is also linerlocking one hand open and close, so it makes it that much easier. My S&W has a serrated blade, but they are available with a straight edge. It also has a pocket clip. Unlike my experiences with overly tight pocket clips ;) , the SWAT's clip is tight enough that it will never leave your side unexpectedly, but loose enough so you can easily slide it off your belt or pocket or wherever with little to no resistance. It is a great knife for an EDC and plus, it looks really cool! :)

While it is a liner lock, you may want to look at an Emerson CQC11. I have found it to be a very useful and comfortable knife.

The Spyderco Police is also an excellent choice.

You should get a BM 806D2 and a Spyderco Military. Those 2 knives will last you forever.... and you will have a little variety in your carry choices.
