Looking for the best survival knife for canada

Thanks for the help, The reason I asked this question in the first place is because I am about to begin survivalist training with a local group that offers these courses, I should be able to finish all courses in a year or so. Once finished I plan on taking annual trips alone into the wilderness for 10 days at a time. They tell me next to proper clothing and fire, your knife is the most important item. I will take my rife when I go alone, but if I get lost, the rife is only as good as my supply of ammo, so it is important for me to have the best knife possible. you are all right, there are alot of choices.

I would ask your trainers what they'd recommend. If they plan on training you living skills for the cold winter, I'd guess that they'd have their own preferences.

Personally, I'd go with a good axe and a smaller knife. People like Mors Kochanski have survived in the Canadian winter with just an axe and a $10 Mora knife.

One more suggestion.

If you are looking at serious winter survival, look for a knife with a full handle. An exposed tang can be pretty uncomfortable on the hands at -30C.

(and yes I know you will be wearing gloves/mitts, but my experience with using tools in cold weather is that sooner or later you slip your hand out of your gloves for a quick task or two and frosty metal can frostbite real quick)

EDIT: And speaking of gloves, take that into consiration when comparing handle sizes.

A little of everything, if such a knife exists.

oh boy.... You need to do your mind! Before you drop cash on any knife at all you should think what do you want to do with it. Or if you already have one and just want to upgrade, ask yourself what do you do with it. Or what kind of needs you have when you go out on a hike. That should point you out in the right direction.

Anyway, I am sure that any knife posted in this thread is going to suffice for almost all your needs. Even the ones you didn't think about before.

I am looking for the best survival knife for the Canadian climate. If you were stuck in the Canadian wilderness for a long period of time which knife would you recommend?

The simple answer is there is no such thing as 'best survivl knife'. I can tell you what I think my best survival knife is. Pitdog will have a different answer, so will kgd and everybody else you ask.

The knives mentioned in this thread are all up to the task - it just depends on how you're going to use it and what you like.

I've lived in Canada my whole life, spent time in the forces here and done my fair share of trail time. You may already have covered this, but from my experiences no self-respecting bushman goes into the Canadian wilderness without at least a hatchet but preferably an Axe. If you have that covered take a look at the Rat Cutlery line of knives specifically the RC-4 it is plenty of knife for anything that you are going to need to do. to be honest the coated 1095 isn't going to require a lot of maintenance even on a 10 day tour.

The Fallkniven F1 is practical and not too heavy. And it's a proven design.
Perhaps add a small axe or folding saw, if not too heavy.

+ 1 You will find training easiest if you are using tools that they are comfortable with, and that they will be able to show you how to use well.

To stay with the fact that you are up in Canada... Grohmann Knife, and an Iltis (Ox Head) Axe, both of which I have heard are fairly easy to find, above the border.
